follow up on "[Rd] NAMESPACE & methods guidance, please" ( http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/e4/devel/08/06/1901.html )
This is a follow-up on the discussion originally posted on the R-devel list ( http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/e4/devel/08/06/1901.html ), as I have encountered the exact same issue mentioned in Martin's email. Here is a simplified version of my problem:

Just jumping to conclusions since the site is down as I type (7PM EST).
What's the news from that part of Australia -- thus showing my complete

Creating windows binary R package (PowerArchiver vs. zip -r9X)
...ot; to install it, it seems R only recognizes the .zip file created by "zip -r9X" not by PowerArchiver. Do you know why? I vaguely remember I used WinZip before and it worked fine. The two threads I found on R-help and R-devel help me a lot, but don't really answer my question.http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/06/06/29587.htmlhttp://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/devel/05/12/3336.htmlThanks,...Tao

multi-argument returns
Dear R users,
I have multi-argument returns in a function and I am warned by the program
they are deprecated.
I have found this in the R-help archives :
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/01c/0319.html
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/01c/0356.html
Since I am not too good at programming, the list solution seems the better
one for me. It is also the one advocated by Kevin Murphy.
So rather than writing return(x,y,z), I should write at the end of my
fun...

passing character vectors to FORTRAN
Hi,
I've been trying to pass a character vector from R to a FORTRAN subroutine. There have been several posts discussing this issue (e.g. http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/98a/0547.html, http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/05/10/13558.html, http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/01a/2577.html, http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/01c/1795.html, http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/devel/03a/0620.html, http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/devel/...

Differences between package and library terminology
...of curiosity, what is the difference between the terms for
package and library ? Why are we loading a package with the library()
command ?
If this is a case of RTFM, I would be happy to do so if pointed in the
right direction. I have searched the FAQ and mail archives and only came
up with http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/05/02/12162.html but this
still does not explain what is the requirement/features of a package vs.
library.
Does this question not qualify to be included in the FAQs.
Thank you

plot legend: combining filled boxes and lines
Hello,
I have difficulties combining boxes and lines in plot legend. I
searched previous R-posts and found this (with no solution):
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/06/07/30248.html. Is there a
way to avoid boxes behind the line legends?

Is R on Windows multi-threaded
Hi,
A previous thread suggests that R on Windows is multi-threaded
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/03b/6946.html
When I'm running R 2.5.1 on a dual core pc I get Rgui.exe uses up to 50%
of the available cpu and the rest is not used. i.e. it only uses one
cpu. I'm soon going to get a nice shiny new 8 cpu machine which it would
be very nice to fully utilize.
Is th...

Cross-compile errors under R-2.4.0 and R-2.4.1
Dear all,
I already posted a question regarding this to an existing thread:
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/e2/devel/06/10/0852.html#start
I apologize for the double posting but I have some further information
that might be illuminating.
I am trying to cross-compile my R-package under ubuntu linux, kernel
2.6.17-10-generic, on an IBM T60.
I am following the suggested steps in

RODBC help
I am using the RODBC package to read data from an Excel file. An excerpt of
the file looks like this:

My problem appears to be related to specification of data types by column.
For instance, the CUSIPS in column 1 are

GEE with user-specified link function
Hello,
I would like to try to fit a GEE with user-specified link function.
I read through a couple of thread on the list, for example http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/04/12/9768.html#start and http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/06/04/25298.html. I noticed that they are all 6 or more years old and the answer is very clear for GLM, however for GEE I am still not sure.
There are two existing package for GEE. One is called gee and anther...

rsync not deleting files
This seems to be a common topic. I really _have_ looked at the archives before
posting, though, and can't find anything that covers this.
I'm backing up an entire server over the net, except for a few excluded files:
echo `date` >/var/log/rsync.tolstoy
/usr/bin/rsync -avHz --stats --delete --numeric-ids --exclude=/sys
--exclude=/home/backup --exclude=/monthly /
backup@tolstoy:/backup/chekov >>/var/log/rsync.tolstoy 2>&1
The backup works great. However, I've got a bunch of obsolete directories in
/home which I erased. On...

Select the last two rows by id group
Hi R-users,
Following this post http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/06/06/28965.html ,
how do I get last two rows (or six or ten) by id group out of the data
frame? Here the example gives just the last row.
Sincere thanks,

Surprise when indexing with a factor.
...not sorted alphabetically, m[f] and
m[as.character(f)] yield different results. m[f] is actually equivalent
to m[as.numeric(f)].
I'm not the first to have been beaten by this (documented) feature, as I
discovered in a recent thread ("[R] Indexing by factor misfeature",

If I am breaking the posting rules by writing again about a previous
