startx reboots my computer
...org.0.log What DOES happen: on a good run, I get the error message: /usr.../startx: fork: resource temporarily unavailable on a bad run the computer either locks up or reboots, or I get a parade of notices that the comp is "out of memory, shutting down process xxxxxx". running top -u tmiller -b>/tmp/top.log in another console generates a huge file. After deleting the process entry lines (all end in startx, except the bash line), I get results like this: top - 22:27:23 up 3 min, 2 users, load average: 0.03, 0.07, 0.03 Tasks: 66 total, 1 running, 65 sleeping, 0 stopped,...

KDE oops
I realize this may technically be "off topic", but I have made all the icons on my KDE desktop disappear. It is something in the KDE setup in my /home/tmiller/... setup, as my wife's icons work fine. It is probably the result of something I deleted or moved in moving my home directory from Mandriva 2006 to Centos 4. The files are all in /home/tmiller/Desktop, but they don't show up on the desktop. Neither do the device icons, or any other...

What is the official method to install Java on Centos? I searched, but could find no mention of Java on the Web site. Ted Miller Centos 4.3 x86_64 Indiana

Ctl+Alt+F12
I am migrating from Mandriva to Centos (currently running dual boot). One thing I miss on Centos is being able to switch to Console 12 and see system messages in real time. My IPCop firewall has this turned on as well. Is this a setting I can change, or a program I can add, or is it not available? Ted Miller

Lost path to root directory!
I'll admit I am new to LVM2, but I have got myself in a bad spot. I renamed the LVM volume and volume group so that I can keep track of what is in them. I have changed grub's menu.lst, /etc/fstab, and /etc/mtab, but somewhere else there is still something telling lvm that my root drive is on VolGroup00. Where is it, and how do I convince it that VolGroup00/Volume00 (or whatever the

Bullet proof cron job???
I have a cron job that runs once a day. There are times when it runs that it disrupts other things on the computer, so I want to kill it. Under Mandriva I had no problems killing the process, and that was the end of that. Under Centos I cannot kill it with a sig 15 or a sig 9. Tonight the process would have trashed hours of work, so after spending two minutes as root trying to kill the

looking for libpangocairo
I installed Komposer from .tgz file, since I couldn't find it on any of my repos. It wants to use libpangocairo, but I can't find anywhere willing to give it to me. I did a yum provides libpangocairo, but nobody would own up to having it. Is there somewhere I can download a compatible .rpm? Is there somewhere I can rpm a compatible libpangocairo? Thanks, Ted Miller Indiana

Printer job control
What do I have to change to allow ANY user to control ANY print job? Having this locked on a workstation with a local printer attached just makes me want to take Centos and throw it across the room, especially when I can't even stop my own print jobs when something goes wrong. This has already cost me considerable money in wasted ink. This should be a check-box somewhere, or else a

VM accessing Hosts hard disk
I want to be able to have a shared drive that the VMs can access from the host machine. Basically I have downloaded install files from the internet into a directory on the host and would like to copy them to the VM to run vs re-downloading them from the internet. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. -- Thomas Miller Chrome Portal Project Manager CPCUG Programmers SIG Chairperson

Yum w/o direct connect
I am hoping someone else is already doing what I need to do, and can give me some pointers. Situation: 1. I am running Centos 4.3 x86_64 on a machine at home, without broadband access. I have dialup access, but that doesn't work very well for something like "yum update", so I am still running 4.3 as issued on the CDs. 2. I have high speed access at work, and I have a USB drive to
