ANN: Traffic-Control-tcng-HTB-HOWTO on TLDP
Hello all,
This is just a self-aggrandizing note to inform you all that my rather
brief introduction to traffic control using tcng and HTB is available now
on TLDP.
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Traffic-Control-tcng-HTB-HOWTO/
I welcome any criticism.

Getting the return value of the last command run
All commands return a value, usually 0 if run properly. For instance, try:
$ ls && echo "done"
$ lsd && echo "done"
The echo command is only executed if the ls command exited
successfully. If one did not add the echo command with the && after a
command, how can he determine if the command exited successfully? I
have a particularly troubling script that

missing module dir?
I'm teaching myself about ethernet cards, and found a TLDP page. I have
CentOS 5.3.
In this section: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO-2.html#ss2.4
in the 'Driver as module' subsection, regarding PCI cards, it states
that there should be a directory "/lib/modules/`uname -r`/net"

XDMCP forwarding
I don't know if this is a bug or a limitation in ssh2 but I am unable to
get get an xdm (or gdm) login on my machine at home through an ssh
tunnel through our firewall at work.
Should this be possible using ssh port forwarding?
Please reply to me at: rwk at americom.com

EL6: Hard Disk upgrade howto?
I have a tested copy of EL6 that I would like to duplicate to a number of
similar servers, but can't seem to find a sane howto on the subject. TLDP's
"Hard disk upgrade howto" is embarrassingly antiquated: when's the last time
you saw LILO?
What's the recommended procedure for doing an HDD copy/upgrade from one disk
to another? Is there a nice, detailed howto that explains this in detail?
My set up is pretty straig...

ALTQ - Bandwidth Manager
Hi,
I have to port ALTQ(Alternate Queueing) software form the FreeBSD to QNX.
It''s more like a bandwidth manager.
Since I am new to this domain, any kind of help will be useful.
I have many doubts like
* What exactly is a bandwidth manager
* Where will it sit in the OS
* How will it be implemented.
Thanks in advance
Prajith.

CentOS and BAT File
In windows, we use BAT file to execute few series of command , which help us
in not writing each command manually everytime we want to execute those
commands.
In CentOS, I want to do the same thing.
Any Advice ?

Lotus Notes and Daylight Saving Time
...rom a Windows point of view this is perfectly normal, because
Windows changes the hwclock to the new version of localtime on every DST
event. It doesn't change the timezone it lives in because there is no
need to.
Linux on the other hand takes care about DST in software. (compare
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/TimePrecision-HOWTO/index.html )
And so LotusNotes gets confused. You can even create the time shift
effect, if you change the timezone using tzconfig on the fly.
This is very annoying and I cannot imagine there is no viable
solution out there ...

Xen backups using LVM Snapshots
Hi all,
I am running Xen 3.2-1 / 2.6.18 on Debian Etch (Dom0).
I setup a Dom0 with several DomUs (Linux). Each DomU disk is a LV partition. I have been seeing a few mails about backups and LVM and just wanted to make sure that what I am doing is correct.
Each DomU with a database has a cron that dumps the db with mysqldump. Later on, Dom0 will do an LVM Snapshot of all DomUs and then do a

HP NetServer LC2000r and LH6000r install woes

each loads the megaraid driver, but none of them can see any volumes.
fixes i have already tried:
1) on the LH6000rs i have disabled "Smart IRQ" reallocation; on the
LC2000rs i have disabled "Reserve PCI Bus Numbers" as described in
this document:

these fixes have made the megaraid driver stop complaining about IRQ
conflicts or routing errors.
2) i have tried switching each NetRAID controller from I20 to "Mass

3) i have tried manually adding the i2o_block d...

[Bridge] Is bridgeing possible with kernel 2.6.10
...l 2.6.10 (coldfire 5485)
yet. When i try to configure bridgeing
with "brctl", everything seems to be ok, but i if i try to ping through
my bridge, i see ARP-Request arriving on the other side, but the
ARP-Responses do not go back through the bridge.
Now i could read in
"http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-Bridge-netfilter-HOWTO-2.html#ss2.1"
that "Use of kernel 2.6 is not yet a good idea".
So do i have a change to get it working?
Thank You

broadcast over gre tunnel?
Hello,
I connected the network 192.168.1.0 with 192.168.2.0 over the internet
trough a GRE-Tunnel.
I don''t know if I set up all things right: The client-pcs in both networks
have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.2.x''s default gateway is the
server wich has started the tunnel.
The 192.168.1.x''s default gateway is 192.168.1.250 wich routes traffic

OT: cvs passwd scripting
Howdy and sorry 'bout the OT:
I'd like to write a script that once a week updated my wine CVS
sources for me. There's just one catch: I don't know how to give a
response to the passwd for the cvs tree from a script. I checked out
the advanced bash scripting at tldp.org, but I couln't get Standard
I/O rerouting to do what I wanted. Could someone give me a pointer,
or point me in the right direction on how to pass a passwd back to
the cvs server?
Thanks,

Upgrading to Verizon FIOS from Verizon DSL - Linux machine as router/Gateway/LAN server]
Greetings,
A long time ago I setup a Linux machine as a Gateway/LAN Server using
Verizon DSL as the ISP.
I used the following HOWTO as the guide - DSL HOWTO For Linux:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/index.html
Is there something comprable for Verizon FIOS?
My Gateway machine runs Fedora.
For a new server, I'm considering setting up a CentOS machine, while still
using Fedora on my desktop and laptop.
Much thanks,
