Blocking workgroup discovery
..., my colleagues see
all the workgroups from my side of the VPN (I live on a campus with ~50
workgroups). Do you know how I block the workgroup discovery on through
the VPN gateway? Is the broadcast done on a specific port? Is samba
actively repeating the broadcast and their replies?

*Building* a covariance matrix efficiently

I want to build a covariance matrix out of the data from a binary
file, that I can read in chunk by chunk, with each chunk containing a
single observation vector X. I wonder how to do that most efficiently,
avoiding the calculation of the full symmetric matrices XX'. The
trivial non-optimal approach boils down to something like:
