home shares and thunderbird profiles
...eering files on other shares and we never see a delayed write failed error on those, so it seems to me that it is not a general networking problem, but rather a thunderbird or home share problem. Are there any tuning tips for the home share that might help? samba on quad core vs dual core
For a new file server that doesn't really do much other than run samba, is there any advantage to quad core CPUs vs dual core? Say the two options are equivalent in price. Thanks, Mark

minor public folder problem still in v1.0.0
This minor problem still exists in the current version. http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-December/018251.html It's my own fault, I kept meaning to test one of the latest versions before the 1.0 release and never got around to it. Oh well, just mentioning it so it stays on the list of things to do. 1.0.0 update from RC15 went smoothly here. Thanks, Mark Nienberg

XP explorer delay in showing file icons
I upgraded a samba PDS and a samba domain member server from 2.0.28 to 2.0.33 and noticed a change in the speed of browsing directories that contain large files. I don't mean a large number of files in the directory, rather, large files like installers of 60Mb or larger. XP clients using windows explorer display the file names and then have a long delay before the icons show up. The

public folders aren't public
I'm testing dovecot as a replacement for an aging UW-IMAP server. I have the basic IMAP setup working but I'm stuck on public folders (which my users are addicted to). I set up public folders generally a described in the wiki. The problem is that when a user creates a new public folder, the folder is owned by the user with permissions drwx------ which prevents other users from

moving public folders to private Trash
Using Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 against dovecot beta9: If a user has Thunderbird configured to move deleted messages into a Trash folder, then the user cannot delete folders in a public namespace. There is no problem deleting messages. Thunderbird says: "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Can't rename mailbox to another storage type." All mailboxes

Stub error changing machine account password
Forgive me if this gets double posted, but I've been struggling with this Gmane way of using the mailing list. (A good idea that doesn't work and results in lots of spam and viruses, but that's another story). About 3 weeks ago I upgraded our samba server from 2.2.8a on RedHat 7.3 to 3.0 on Fedora. The samba server is a PDC. The following error message appears in the event log on

REPOST: all machine password changes fail
More information: I managed to get an ethereal capture of the conversation between a workstation and the samba PDC during an attempted machine password change. I tried posting it as an attachment, but I guess the list won't accept that. I would be happy to e-mail it to a developer or anyone else who is willing to have a look and see if the explanation to the problem is in there. The file is

rpmbuild --rebuild vs makerpms.sh
I made rpms for Fedora Core 1 by using "rpmbuild --rebuild" on the ".src.rpm" file that is in the Fedora section of the samba download area. Are my results the same as they would be if I downloaded the tar file and ran the packaging/Fedora "makerpms.sh" script? Is one way preferred? Thanks, Mark

core dumps with 3.0.23c
I have a fedora core 5 server running samba-3.0.23c-1.fc5 from fedora updates. Recently I changed smb.conf to use security=domain instead of security=user. The server that it authenticates against is running fedora core 4 with samba-3.0.14a-2. Anyway, this setup worked just fine for a couple of weeks, but today I yum updated many packages including pam, glibc and kernel on the fedora 5

fedora x86_64 packaging questions
On a Fedora Core 4 x86_64 system the following packages are installed: (These are the official Fedora packages, not the samba.org fedora packages) samba.x86_64 samba-client.x86_64 samba-common.x86_64 samba-common.i386 samba-swat.x86_64 Note that for samba-common, both the x86_64 and the i386 packages are installed. Questions: Why does Fedora do this? Is it really necessary? I ask because I

missing packaging/Fedora/makerpms.sh
I downloaded the tar.gz file for 3.0.27a and I noticed there is not a Fedora directory inside the packaging directory. I'm fairly certain there used to be one in older versions. I'm groping now to figure out how to build rpms for Fedora 4, which I know is a little old but I don't have resources to upgrade the OS now. Was it intentionally removed? Mark

migrating DOS attributes
I've decided to modernize my samba installation by switching to storing dos attributes as extended attributes on the linux file sytem. It would be nice to convert the dos attributes that are currently "mapped" into the new extended attributes. I found this page on the samba wiki: http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Migration_Tools but the link to the perl script is dead and the

all machine password changes fail
None of the Win 2000 workstations on my Samba 3.02 network is able to change its password. Every machine's event log contains error messages every 30 days like this: Changing machine account password for account P2450-2$ failed with the following error: The stub received bad data. For the machines that are restarted every day, the error message only appears once or twice evey 30 days. For

accounts disabled after 3.0.2 upgrade
Just a heads up to anyone upgrading to 3.0.2. In our case we used the new Fedora Core updates (the ones from the Fedora team, not the ones on the samba website) to update a samba PDC from 3.0.0. As stated in the release notes for 3.02a (which I read on the samba website): Beginning with Samba 3.0.2, passwords for accounts with a last change time (LCT-XXX in smbpasswd, sambaPwdLastSet attribute
