Samba share of a NFS mount
..., also. The easiest way to do so
is to NFS mount the directory on my Samba server, and export the directory
as a Samba share.
It works. Kind of. But it redefines 'slow'.
Copying the file from a normal Samba share takes under 10 seconds on a slow
network:
[c:\program files\resource kit]timethis.exe copy y:\testfile \tmp
TimeThis : Command Line : copy y:\testfile \tmp
TimeThis : Start Time : Mon May 04 09:24:30 2009
Y:\testfile => C:\tmp\testfile

Frustrated...Samba on linux w/xfs SLOW problem
I have a very simple setup here that I have recently made some
modifications to and it has affected my ability to save files to the
linux samba server.
The recent changes are: converted all fs's to xfs from ext3.
Upgraded to latest kernel 2.6.7 from a 2.4 kernel.
Samba used to work fine. Now, I can copy files out of my linux samba
server to my windows machine at full speed. However, when

With sufficiently large test files your method might be
accurate enough, but still it's better to use the
program "timethis.exe" to measure the execution time of
a program like this:
timethis copy C:\a-big-file X:\a-share
It can be downloaded from Microsoft for free but you need
to underclick an eula.

Standardized Benchmarking?
Hello all,
I'm creating a site where people can share their benchmarks. If you are
interested, the site is at (I just started on it so it has the stock
graphics and color scheme still):
www.dcsnow.com/mambo
I would like some thoughts on what would be a good way to standardize the
testing so the results are more comparable. Is Bonnie+ a good program for
hard drive speed testing? Is there

ftp 8x faster than samba
I've seen this problem mentioned many times in the various FAQs and
How-Tos on the Internet, but none of the solutions presented therein
have worked for me.

workgroup = UNIX
server string = OPTIMUS
interfaces = eth0
log level = 1
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 0

Performance of samba in linux vs windows
I'm doing some performance tests on a samba NAS server and I've found some
interesting statistics:
I'm doing my performance tests in linux using:
# time dd if=somelargefileovershare of=/dev/null bs=1M count=100
Then calculating the bandwidth
For windows I'm low-tech: stopwatch plus drag-n-drop of a large file (any
recommendations on a 'simple' windows program that will
