fasttest mirror -doesnt seem to pick sites near my region
guys, i have the yum plugin -> fastest mirror . But not even once i have seen it selecting repos which are near my region such as japan or australia ( where i get the best speeds). Something is wrong.
It seems stuck with these 3 sites ;

* apt.sw.be : 0.483867 secs

yum-fastestmirror inconsistent exclude behavior
...i guys,
I'm trying to figure out something wherein excluded repositories for
the yum-fastestmirror plugin are still being used by the system.
To illustrate:
[root at sales ~]# cat /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf
[main]
enabled=1
verbose=0
socket_timeout=3
hostfilepath=/var/cache/yum/timedhosts.txt
maxhostfileage=10
maxthreads=15
#exclude=.gov, facebook
exclude=maulvi, .gov.ph, .vn
(Note the name of mirrors that I am trying to exclude)
However, when I run yum, this is what I get:
[root at sales ~]# yum update
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile

Poking around I found:
/etc/yum/pluginconf.d and now I see where presto comes from. I noticed in the fastmirror.conf there is a line
hostfile-timedhosts.txt
On my test box it has several lines of hosts with a number.
On the box I?m have yum update issues, it is blank. ??

ghostscript 8.70-6.el5_7.3
nspr 4.8.8-1.el5_7
nss 3.12.10-4.el5
nss-tools 3.12.10-4.el5
ntp-4.2.2p1-15.el5
initscripts-8.45.38-2.el5
However yum reported 404 on everything

CentOS6 yum-plugin-fastestmirror spectacular failure
I'm trying to update from the cr repo, but yum-plugin-fastestmirror gets
it totally wrong; it selects a mirror in .hk that deliveres bytes per second,
and as far as I can tell, most or all of the timedhosts.txt entries are
in the Middle or Far East. What's going on? Nobody mirroring cr in other
parts of the world?

Can I force yum to only use http.
Our outsourced IT department has decided to use white listing on the firewalls for outbound ftp. I was given a list of sites our lab had accessed via ftp and eventually tracked them down to Linux machines running yum. They are all CentOS 5 or 6 with a smattering of 7. It is impractical to list all the possibilities since they change on a regular basis. Also any 3rd party repos we need are
