Baring any unforeseen issues R-devel will switch in about a week from the NAMED mechanism to reference counting for determining when objects can be safely mutated in base C code. This is expected to have minimal impact on packages not using unsupported coding practices in their C code. The transition to reference counting has been in progress for a number of years. Prior to the change a first argument that is anything other than a character vector would produce an error. After the change, passing in a symbol will do the obvious thing. I've committed the change to use Free instead of free in tcltk.c and sys-std.c (r78652 for R-devel, r78653 for R-patched). We might consider either moving Calloc/Free out of the Windows remapping or moving the remapping into header files so everything seeing our header files uses our calloc/free.
