how do I read only specific columns using read.csv or other read function
Hi R people:
I have huge files with as many as 5000 columns. I'd really like to read
only certain columns of those files. I know column names I want to read.
I looked at the documentation of read.csv . Although there is a
col.names option, it allows users to specify the names of the columns,
rather than to pick the columns of interest.
Any suggestions on how to pick the columns I want to

How to identify overlapped items from two list and plot them?
Hi list,
I have a question on how to identify the overlapped items from two vectors:
>x<-c(0,1,2)
>y<-c(1,2,2,3)
and plot the number of the overlapped as well as non-overlapped in a
diagram?

Length of data.frame column
I have a beginner question. After I finally get the data to a data.frame that I can work with I have the following a data frame that is fairly long:
> length(r2007)
[1] 17409
If I look at the first element:
> r2007[1]
$`100009`
DayOfYear Quantity
1 66 1
2 128 1
3 137 1
4 193 1
Now how do I get the length of this list (actually it is
