Recover ZFS destroyed dataset?
I was asked by a coworker about recovering destroyed datasets on ZFS - and
whether it is possible at all? As a related question, if a filesystem dataset was
recursively destroyed along with all its snapshots, is there some means to at
least find some pointers whether it existed at all?
I remember "zpool import -D" can be used to import whole destroyed pools.
But crawling around the

Is SUNWhd for Thumper only?
I read Ben Rockwood''s blog post about Thumpers and SMART
(http://cuddletech.com/blog/pivot/entry.php?id=993). Will the SUNWhd
package only work on a Thumper? Can I use this on my snv_101 system
with AMD 64 bit processor and nVidia SATA?

A disk on Thumper giving random CKSUM error counts
Hello all,
As some of you might remember, there is a Sun Fire X4500
(Thumper) server that I was asked to help upgrade to modern
disks. It is still in a testing phase, and the one UltraStar
3Tb currently available to the server''s owners is humming
in the server, with one small partition on its tail which
replaced a dead 250Gb disk earlier in to pool. The OS is
still SXCE snv_117 so

3510 JBOD ZFS vs 3510 HW RAID
Hi there
Is it fair to compare the 2 solutions using Solaris 10 U2 and a commercial database (SAP SD scenario).
The cache on the HW raid helps, and the CPU load is less... but the solution costs more and you _might_ not need the performance of the HW RAID.
Has anybody with access to these units done a benchmark comparing the performance (and with the pricelist in hand) came to a conclusion.

understanding zfs/thunoer "bottlenecks"?
Currently I''m trying to figure out the best zfs layout for a thumper wrt. to read AND write performance.
I did some simple mkfile 512G tests and found out, that per average ~ 500 MB/s seems to be the maximum on can reach (tried initial default setup, all 46 HDDs as R0, etc.).
According to http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/ArchitectureWP_062806.pdf I would

Using ZFS for replication
Fairly new to ZFS. I am looking to replicate data between two thumper boxes.
Found quite a few articles about using zfs incremental snapshot send/receive. Just a cheeky question to see if anyone has anything working in a live environment and are happy to share the scripts, save me reinventing the wheel. thanks in advance.

Can I trust ZFS?
...me tonight I was wondering whether I''m going to have to swallow my pride and order a hardware raid controller for this server, letting that deal with the drive issues, and just using ZFS as a very basic filesystem.
What has me re-considering ZFS though is that on the other hand I know the Thumpers have sold well for Sun, and they pretty much have to use ZFS. So there''s a big installed base out there using it, and that base has been using it for a few years. I know from the Thumper manual that you have to unconfigure drives before removal on them on those servers, which goes a long...

X45xx storage vs 7xxx Unified storage
...ility issue, and perhaps get performance benefits the SSD.
however, the costs constrain the capacity we could afford.
If anyone has experience with both systems, or with the 7xxx system in a cluster configuration, we would be interested in hearing:
1) Does the 7xxx perform as well or better than thumpers?
2) Does the 7xxx failove r work as expected (in test and real life)
3) Does the SSD really help?
4) Do the analytics help prevent and solve real problems, or arui?he ge they frivolous pretty pictures?
5) is the 7xxx really a black box to be managed only by the GUI?
6) If are in or near Toronto, wo...

ZFS Space Map optimalization
I have a huge problem with space maps on thumper. Space maps takes over 3GB
and write operations generates massive read operations.
Before every spa sync phase zfs reads space maps from disk.
I decided to turn on compression for pool ( only for pool, not filesystems ) and it helps.
Now space maps, intent log, spa history are compressed.
Not I''m thinking about disabling checksums. All

The real src field is 9500.
Is a bug??

login fails if smbusers is used to map domain admin to root.
Hi,
i am trying to map the domain administrator to root using the
smbusers file in order to be able to set file permissions from windows.
Unfortunately, while the map itself seem to succeed, the logins fails.
If i remove the relevant line in smbusers, login succeed but i lack
superuser privileges.
Here is log.smbd while trying to map administrator to root

scrub differs in execute time?
I have a raidz2 and did a scrub, it took 8h. Then I reconnected some drives to other SATA ports, and now it takes 15h to scrub??
Why is that?

x4500 resilvering spare taking forever?
I''ve got a Thumper running snv_57 and a large ZFS pool. I recently noticed a drive throwing some read errors, so I did the right thing and zfs replaced it with a spare.
Everything went well, but the resilvering process seems to be taking an eternity:
# zpool status
pool: bigpool
state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An

How to set ZFS metadata copies=3?
Let''s say you are paranoid and have built a pool with 40+ disks in a Thumper.
Is there a way to set metadata copies=3 manually?
After having built RAIDZ2 sets with 7-9 disks and then pooled these together, it just seems like a little bit of extra insurance to increase metadata copies. I don''t see a need for extra data copies which is currently the only trigger I see for that.

Cloning a ZFS compact flash card
I need some help please.
I am currently using a compact flash as the boot drive (ZFS) on a thumper.
I want to create a clone of it to a file and restore it to a new CF card on another thumper. Unfortunately, an exact make, model and size of the CF has a few less cylinders so a straight dd of the slice2 does not work. Now I have to navigate the intricacies of the trying to clone rpool etc, which

OpenSSH 2.1.0 won't build without rc5 and idea
OK, I've hacked configure so that it simply checks that it can link
with openssl. Now, when I run make, it dies on authfile.c while
trying to include the non-existent headers openssl/rc5.h and
openssl/idea.h. I built my installation of openssl without those
algorithms in order to avoid commercial licensing issues.
The following diff band-aids the problem, but I think it's down-stream

OpenIndiana production-ready?
Hello list,
What''s the current production-readiness of OI 151a? I''m evaluating Solaris 11 at the moment on HP server hardware + SAS JBODs. Also considering picking up a Thumper/Thor on the used market. For a ZFS storage server, is it a better idea to just stick w/ Oracle Solaris, or is OI also a good bet? How do the ZFS implementations differ between Solaris 11 and OI?
Thanks
