OpenSSH 3.6.1p1 AIX installp/bff packages available.
...are two tarballs, one for the as-distributed code and one with the password expiration patch. Each tarball contains binaries for AIX 4.x and AIX 5.x. The usual caveats apply (see page). These packages have been more popular than I ever thought they'd be. They are about to clock up the one thousandth download, so I'm offering a prize to thousandth downloader [2]. Note that this will probably be the last release I publish AIX packages for as I will no longer have access to AIX boxes to build them on. -Daz. 99.9% uptime
...uaranteeing 99.9% uptime for NT. The guy who wrote the reply did the math for what that means, and the results are very interesting. Quote below: OK, now what does a 99.9% uptime guarantee mean? Well, it means that at bottom, a guarantee that the machine will not be down for more than one one-thousandth of the time. If we assume that we have a stable system, ie., one where the system is not taken down for software upgrades, etc., then we are looking at the time from a system crash (strictly, I think, from the time that the crash is actually noticed) to the time that the system is running a...

MLE, precision
...od function is: l<- function(m1,m2,b) -sum( d*( log(m1) + log(m2) + log(1- exp(-(b + m2)*t)) ) + (m1/b - d)*log(m2 + b*exp(-(b + m2)*t) ) + m1*t - m1/b*log(b+m2) ) here d and t are given, "sum" means sum over these two vairables. the parameters are assumed small, m1, m2 in thousandth, m2 in millionth. I used the function "nlm" to estimate m1,m2,b. But the result is very bad. you can get more than 50 warnings, most of them are about "negative infinity"in log. And the results are initial value dependent, or you will get nothing when you choose some values. S...

Time and space considerations in using predict.glm.
...be an issue of swap-time, and so it could potentially be solved by addressing my first question above. However, given that I am essentially asking R to compute 1 / (1 + exp(-(b0 + b1*x1 + b2*x2 + b3*x1*x2))) I can't see any reason why this request should be taking longer than a hundredth or a thousandth of a second, say. Obviously R is providing a much greater level of functionality than I am requiring in this particular instance, so my overall question is what is the best way for me to reduce the size of the data I have to store in my GLM models, and to increase the speed at which I can use R to...

The R Foundation announces new mailing list 'R-package-devel'
...ackage-devel contributors will do their best to provide you accurate and authoritative information, the final arbiters of CRAN submission is the CRAN team. Please keep it civil. It's easy to get frustrated when building a package, or when answering the same question for what feels like the thousandth time. But everyone involved in the process is a volunteer. Include a reproducible example. We can't help if we don't know what the problem is. For packages, if possible, include a link to the package source. If you're having a problem with R CMD check, include the relevant message i...

smbclient feature request
Dear all, because I don't know if there is some kind of xmessage under Sun's Solaris, I made a little ksh script which, by now, only notifies me when a filesystem has reached a certain %-use using smbclient -M. Because I'm thinking of some other implementations, my question/feature request: is there any way of putting some other buttons on the notification window that smbclient
