Commands failing silently?
Hello all: I have a couple CentOS 4 servers (all up-to-date) that are having strange command failures. I first noticed this with a perl script that uses lots of system calls. Basically, sometimes a command just won't run: thoth(52) /tmp> ls thoth(53) /tmp> ls thoth(54) /tmp> ls thoth(55) /tmp> ls learner lost+found/ thoth(56) /tmp> ls learner lost+found/ thoth(57) /tmp> ls learner lost+found/ thoth(58) /tmp> ls learner lost+found/ thoth(59) /tmp> ls learner lost+found/ thoth(60) /tmp&g...

forwarding stdin/out to remote socket
...t step 3 to fail if it would take a long time for ssh to setup the forwarding. Now all this can be avoided if vnc would simply use stdin/out from ssh as a communication channel and make sure that ssh would forward the remote port to it. Currently I did it using netpipes, http://web.purplefrog.com/~thoth/netpipes/netpipes.html , but it does not seem right to execute an additional process copying megabytes of tcp trafic from vncserver to stdin/out just so ssh can forward it one more time. So it would be nice if ssh can forward a port to stdin/out on its own. AFAICS for ssh2 it would require to mod...

forwarding data ?
Hi, I'm trying to configure ssh to get this behaviour: ssh binds on "localhost:60110" and when a local application connect to that port, all the data are forwarded to the "server". The particular fact is that I can't use port forwarding because I don't have any pop3 daemon on the "server". In fact I'm using a pop3 script as user's shell! $

New Program: Abacus Sentry - Port Scan Detector
Hello, I just made available a beta version of a port scan detector that I''ve been working on. The program, called Abacus Sentry, is a port scan/probe detector that offers what I think are a number of unique and useful features: - Runs on TCP or UDP sockets. Configurable by the user to bind to multiples of sockets for increased detection coverage. - Adjustable scan detection value with

FW: How to configure Unix file mode on NT/2000 file transfer
I could not find this in the list... How can I configure Samba (I'm on 2.2) to automatically strip those pesky ^M character (DOS newline) when I share a Unix/Solaris slice to NT. I'd like to be able to copy files back and forth and not have to edit the files and strip out the control-M characters in my files on Unix. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

Mounting file shares in UTF-8
Hi, I've searched for lots of messages similar to this, but none as detailed as this, and I haven't seen an answer that helps me. I have a Win 2000 machine that has some file shares on it. These shares are international; files and directories have characters from many languages. The system codepage is set to 932. I'm using the smb binaries from samba 3 to mount these shares on a
