...I again missing something? In general, I'm wondering how best to use Xapian so that, at query time, my application can display an excerpt that is relevant to the query, not a sample chosen at indexing time without regard to the query that may or may not contain the query term(s). For example, TheyWorkForYou.com is listed on xapian.org as a site using Xapian, and when I enter a single-term query on that site the document excerpts provided as part of the search results invariably include highlighted words, possibly stemmed, responsive to the query. That's the effect I would like to achieve. If you...

Hi, Ha, I was reading this thread thinking TheyWorkForYou (which I help maintain) does highlight terms wherever they are, and then you mentioned it :) The code is open source; it is quite old and probably hair-raising, but as you say it does basically do what you want. Our Xapian database stores terms/boolean terms/values for the text, and for the documen...

Very far out and static get_matches_estimated
...a bunch of new data to the database. Xapian 1.0.7, checkatleast is set to 100. The database will get new stuff added to it automatically around 8.30am BST, so it's possible this might affect the links I provide, I guess. But I'll note what is currently happening as I write. http://www.theyworkforyou.com/search/?pop=1&s=statistics+19950101..19951231 currently returns 1-20 of 14,678; page 18 gives 341-360 of 14,678: http://www.theyworkforyou.com/search/?pop=1&s=statistics+19950101..19951231&p=18 But then page 19 gives 361-362 of 362, which is correct: http://www.theyworkforyou.com/s...

Comparing against values (e.g. date ranges)
...R query year = 1980 or year = 1981 or year = 1982 .... or (year = 1983 and (month =1 or month = 2 ...)) I think Olly said he was considering adding something to Xapian, so the same fields used for sorting can be used for range comparison. Any progress on this? Francis (this is all for http://www.theyworkforyou.com which has a 4.2G Xapian database and growing!) -- Shhh! Abolish parliament quietly http://www.saveparliament.org.uk

Thanks Olly! But expanding the sample seems like the wrong solution. Is there a way to instead pass a hit or hits from the document to snippet generation? Michael
