ringing... or lack thereof
Want to make sure I understand why a caller might not hear "ringing" when outbound calling. A SIP phone is behind a firewall and is registered to an asterisk server on a public network. Sometimes (but not always) when placing an outbound call there is no ringing before the remote party answers. Its not that the remote party picks up very quickly - the delay may be as long as

Looking for a good disk exerciser
...ot made any irreversible data transfers to this drive, and I have some time yet to take it back, but I'd like to know for sure that it needs it, or at least have some reasonable evidence of failure. What is a good program out there that exercises a disk to give some assurance of errors or lack thereof? Thanks. understanding virtual classes and extensions thereof
I am having some trouble creating a hierarchy of virtual classes (akin to the class structure in the 'Matrix' package). I think they arise from my not understanding the best way to specify virtual subclasses of a virtual class. please see questions below code. setClass("mom") setClass("kid1", representation("mom", "VIRTUAL"))

Unsupported Hardware that works fine?
I recently purchased a set of ASRock Intel i5 MB/CPU combos for a budget compute cluster. Every time we load up a system and try to boot with a recent EL6/64 ISO, we get a message that reads: > This hardware (or a combination thereof) is not supported by CentOS. For more > information on supported hardware, plesae refer to http://www.centos.org/hardware Not only does the hardware *seem* to work to expectations, but the url referenced goes to 404! Having loaded CentOS6 on many systems without ever seeing this message,...

fadvise DONTNEED implementation (or lack thereof)
I've recently been trying to track down the root cause of my server's persistent issue of thrashing horribly after being left inactive. It seems that the issue is likely my nightly backup schedule (using rsync) which traverses my entire 50GB home directory. I was surprised to find that rsync does not use fadvise to notify the kernel of its use-once data usage pattern. It looks like a

Providers running dovecot?
Dear list, I am looking for providers of free e-mail addresses known to run Dovecot (or a variant thereof) for IMAP access. I need only a few MB storage space and no particular features beyond SMTP and IMAP. The reason I ask is that Dovecot is known to implement the IMAP spec quite respectfully, and I am writing a software which uses IMAP search (so I would suggest my users to register an e-mail to a...

config file (or lack thereof) question, turning off ttydrv
I am TRYING to use the most recent release of wine. Am I correct to assume that there is no longer a .wine/config file? Am I also correct to assume that all documentation still refers to the .wine/config file, and gives NO F*CKING help about how to use the new system? If these two assumptions are correct, it seems to be a real stupid way to do things. How is a new user EVER supposed to

OpenSSH 2.5.2p2 and askass (fwd)
My c skills are remarkably rusty, but... I've been from one end of the source to the other and it doesn't seem that OpenSSH 2.5.2p2 will *EVER* use ssh-askpass (or any variation thereof). Is there some flag to flip when trying to compile it? I've looked at the SRPM that RedHat distributes, and at the latest CVS source from openssh.com. Neither appears to have any mechanism for calling any askpass utility; if a real live tty doesn't exist the program just aborts. What am...
