Xen''s interface in promiscuous mode
Hello all, Playing with Xen on GNU/Debian Lenny, I just discovered that all my virtual network cards are in promiscuous mode by default. Changing that manually does not seems to change anything (that is, everything still works great). Is there any reason to have virtual network cards in promiscuous mode ? And where can I change this default behaviour ? Thanks, JB

Interesting behavior of lm() with small, problematic data sets
...ctions of finite precision in the analytically exact solution, leading to residuals smaller than the double precision limit. The summary is correctly warning that it's all potentially nonsense, and indeed the only things you can trust are the coefficient values (to within .Machine$double.eps or thereabouts) Interestingly, though, my current version of R (3.4.0) gives numerically exact coefficients (c(1,0) and identically zero standard errors. So this particular example is apparently version-specific. S Ellison ******************************************************************* This email and an...

Dividing a pixel image into factors - (cut.im(), cut.default())
...at. I have found that I can use cut.im() function to divide the range of pixel values into a series of equal length intervals (e.g. if my pixels values range from 0 to 60, cut.im(X.im,breaks=2) will produce two factors one containing pixel values 0-30 and one containing pixel values of 30 - 60, or thereabouts). However, I would like to specify the pixel value at which the factors are created - e.g. create one factor containing pixel values of 0-5 and another factor containing all other pixel values. I have been struggling to work out how to do this using either cut.im() or cut.default(). Can any...

Centos 5.8: starting firefox-16.0.1 kills X
This just started happening this evening. a little history: way back last year, or thereabouts, I posted about a weird problem I was having. over the course of 2 or 3 days I figured out how to fix it, but not what the cause was. the fix amounts to navigating to my user's .local/share/mime directory and removing the file named "globs". So, back in the present: this evening th...

GSM modems
Hi all, I am interested in interfacing a GSM modem to *. I've seen a few comments about doing this, but I'm not clear whether people have actually made it work. I've used GSM modems for various data jobs, mostly high volume SMS (no, not nasty marketing stuff - high volume solicited SMS :-) ) . These only have analogue ports for voice. Does anyone know of units with digital voice

performance with huge files
Hi all, I'm working with some very large files, 500GB or thereabouts, using rsync 3.0.7. I'm not familiar with the internal operation of the rsync protocol, but I've read a few old posts that suggest there may be ways to improve performance. Can anyone give me pointers to config changes or patches that might help reduce the CPU burden when working with s...

Bug report in burg_modified_fix( ) opus1.1-alpha
Hello Opus, I?d like to report a bug in the fixed point OPUS code: line 336 (or thereabouts), operand FIND_LPC_COND_FAC should be replaced with SILK_FIX_CONST(FIND_LPC_COND_FAC ,32), otherwise multiplication by zero typically occurs. please confirm. Plotting a large time series
...e thing is seen if I use plot(myData[[1]], myData[[2]], type="l"). If I use plot(myData[[2]], myData[[1]], type="l") I do get a line (albeit that the orientation seems odd), but again, while the y-axis is drawn between 0 and 7x10e7, the plotting again seems to stop at 3x10e7 or thereabouts. What have I got wrong? How can I get a line (preferably with the standard orientation)? Adrian [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Strange "no-echo" in place of "slave"
...ou do not want keyboard input to be echoed. "Non-echoing" might have been better language though. The 2nd example really is of the master/slave variety, and to my knowledge nothing to do with echoing, so looks like a search-and-replace oversight. Presumably, "worker thread" (or thereabouts) would be a better replacement. -pd > On 6 Oct 2019, at 14:00 , Gabriel Becker <gabembecker at gmail.com> wrote: > > As far as I know, not being involved with the effort at all, they are > removing the term 'slave' and replacing it with 'no-echo' which is inten...

automatic "paste" filter to paste only the commands from a transcript on the clipboard
Just for fun (and actually because I would use it too) I wrote a version of the "paste" menu command that assumes the clipboard contains a transcript, and just pastes the commands from it into the R console window (Windows GUI only). So, if something like this: > foo <- + 33 > foo * 3 [1] 99 > foo [1] 33 is on the clipboard, then the "paste commands" menu

locfit: max number of predictors?
...s.bris.ac.uk/R/web/packages/locfit/locfit.pdf) I can't see an upper limit on the number of predictors; if it is 5 I'm getting close in one of my applications. Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of a 'crisp' upper limit on the number of predictors in locfit? If it is 5, or thereabouts, can anyone suggest an alternative which can handle a few more? (I'm using it for multidimensional interpolation). Best regards, Keith Jewell

Intel Xeon and hyperthreading
...had been running the software using 2 cpu's of the 4 that the OS sees. I'm waiting on a model run to finish to see if there is any appreciable difference, but the one thing I do notice right off is cpu utilization is running close to 100% on both, where before, it averaged maybe 50% or thereabouts. Again, sar is showing at last count, 83.56% utilization for user, 10.27% system and only 0.02% nice. Idle was 5.74%. I'm attempting to squeeze every last bit of processing power out of this machine, and would entertain suggestions on tuning if there happen to be any types of tuning that...

IAX2 * -> * handoff
..., 1) exited non-zero on 'IAX2[darryl@darryl]/6' -- Hungup 'IAX2[darryl@darryl]/6' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The reason this is a problem is that the CDR records on the central machine only show a 6 second call or thereabouts, where we need it to keep track of the entire call. I've tried using the 't' and 'T' options for the Dial command, which according to the docs is supposed to make it stay in the media path, but it still hands the calls off. Any ideas?? TIA Darryl
