Bootstrap / permutation textbooks
Dear R experts,
I would like to explore if and to what extent bootstrapping and
permutation statistics can help me for my research (functional brain
imaging). I am looking for an introductory textbook, rather legible. I
have statistical knowledge, but I am definitely no statistical or
mathematical guru.
Do you have suggestions for a useful textbook?
Thanks a lot,
Peter

Recommendations regarding textbooks
Hello
I was hoping to get some advice regarding teaching R in an academic environment.
What are the best choices with respect to textbooks?
When this question was asked a few years back, people were primarily
recommending ?Modern Applied Statistics with S? and ?Introductory
Statistics with R? as two good choices. I?ve also heard some good
thinks regarding ?An R Companion to Applied Regression?.
Has anything else really good come al...

Statitics Textbook - any recommendation?
I would like to buy a basic statistics book (experimental design,
sampling, ANOVA, regression, etc.) with examples in R. Or download it
in PDF or html format.
I went to the CRAN contributed documentation, but there were only R
textbooks, that is, textbooks where R is the focus, not the
statistics. And I would like to find the opposite.
Other text I am trying to find is multivariate data analysis (EFA,
cluster, mult regression, MANOVA, etc.) with examples with R.
Any recommendation?
Thank you in advance,
Iuri.

Stat textbook recommendations?
...books and pdf tutorials
mention that they are not really meant as a standalone statistics
text book, but in addition to a traditional stats textbook (Verzani
mentions Kitchen's book specifically). So I guess what I'm looking
for is any other recommendations on intro or intermediate textbooks
that deal primarily with the math/theory behind the processes. If
they were oriented towards R that's be great, but otherwise I guess
I'd be most interested in something relatively platform-agnostic -
I've seen some books that were slanted heavily towards a particular

Style guide when using "R" in a title
Hello,
I am working on a small booklet to be used with an existing statistics textbook. The purpose of the booklet is to give worked through examples from the textbook using R code and it will be made publicly available with the textbook. The title of the booklet is "R Code Supplement for Basic Engineering Data Collection and Analysis by Vardeman and Jobe". Someone with whom I'm

Best R textbook for undergraduates
R-helpers:
I'm sure this question has been asked and answered through the ages, but
given there are some new textbooks out there, I wanted to re-pose it. For
a course that will cover the application of R for general computing and
spatial modeling, what textbook would be best to introduce computing with R
to *undergrads*? I understand Bivand and Pebesma's book is fine for
spatial work, but it appears to be for...

textbook on experimental design?
I'll be teaching a graduate course on (the analysis of) experimental
designs next year, using R. Does anyone know of a suitable textbook?
(Venables and Ripley MASS Ch6 on Linear Models covers roughly the right
material, but at a level that is way too difficult for my students.)
Sorry if this has been asked before. I've looked through the archives and
found Julian Faraway's book, but

R Textbook for SAS and SPSS Users
Dear Lists,
I got the chance to review Bob Muenchen's book - R for SAS and SPSS users.
While my detailed review is online at www.decisionstats.com, the book is a
welcome addition in R Textbooks for beginners and an especially nice one for
people who have experience in SAS and /or SPSS languages.
AT 50 USD, it's reasonably priced for all geographies (;) , and quite handy
as a refernce book for three languages.
Regards,
Ajay

Looking for a textbook that is more concise than Applied Linear Statistical Models (2004 version)
Hi,
I know this is a little bit offtopic on this list. But I can't find a
more appropriate forum that I can ask. If there is a high quality
forum on statistics textbook discussion, please let me know.
I am reading Applied Linear Statistical Models. One drawback that I
feel about this book is that it discuss many examples, which is to
distracting. Numbers are give in those examples. Comments

OT: Best applied MCMC textbooks?
Hi All,
I'm preparing to co-teach a class on applied MCMC using R as the
computational engine in the spring. As a consequence, I'm starting
to look at MCMC textbooks. Please send along your recommendations!
I will collate the responses and post a summary, so please reply to
me directly.
Thanks,

Recommendations on nonparametric statistical inference textbooks
Could somebody recommend some good nonparametric statistical inference
textbooks for a beginner? And what are pros and cons of each book?
Nonparametric statistical methods by Hollander seems to be more
difficult for a beginner, but is great as a reference, right? Are
there any books that are easier to learn than Hollander's?
Also, I see some books in the wiki page. I don&...

Stat textbook recommendation
Monte,
For a list of online sources that may be useful, go to
http://www.uvm.edu/~dhowell/methods/Websites/Archives.html
and check out some of the material referenced there. Clay Helberg's site
is particularly helpful. Unfortunately it is virtually impossible to
keep links current, so some are likely to be dead--although you can
often find them via Google.

one-sample binomial test
Hi everyone,
Here's how I solved a problem for my stats class. I'm pretty sure I
understand what's going on, but I wonder if there's a more direct way to
solve it.
Problem summary:
A recent poll indicated that Candidate A is leading B with 55% of the
vote. How many voters need to be surveyed to ensure a margin of error of
+/- 2.5% with 99% confidence.
Here's what I did:

Learning advanced R
...Could you please suggest the best way to become an "advanced" R programmer.
I went through "R for dummies" by de Vries and Meys and I can see two ways
to proceed:
1) Get a more advanced textbook. E.g. could you recommend Gentleman,
"R for Bioinformatics"?
2) Because textbooks are limited and become obsolete fast, I can focus on learning state-of-the-art packages,
but for that I need to find a list of most useful general purpose packages (foreach, doParallel, etc) that is
updated in real time. Does such list exist?
Your recommendations are very welcome.
Thanks,
Nik

Well, I tend to disagree.
He did not say he'd want to use the R logo
and there is really nobody saying that "you should".
Using the letter 'R' as are regular word (noun) in a title is
perfectly fine.

Recommended textbooks for R?
Hi everyone!
I've recently begun to learn R for my job as the IT department suffers
from lack of funding for new software. I was talking to the guy in
charge of Requisitions and have found out the budget for books is in
great shape.
So, I'm curious what books people know of that have R examples and are
good for:
1.) Uni and Multivariate Time Series Analysis/Forecasting
2.) GLMs (at

Recommendation on a probability textbook (conditional probability)
I need to refresh my memory on Probability Theory, especially on
conditional probability. In particular, I want to solve the following
two problems. Can somebody point me some good books on Probability
Theory? Thank you!

distributions are known.
Now, I want to compute E(X | Z = z).

reference on p.adjust()
I'm wondering if there is a textbook that summarize the methods on
adjusting p-values for multiple comparisons. Most of the references on
p.adjust() are over 10 years old. I feel it would be better if
somebody could recommend me a textbook on multiple hypothesis
correction, so that I can quickly get a general idea of different
methods.

I even tried to read [17] Julian J. Faraway. Linear Models with R. This book
