...n of many of us at least, a very BAD thing as it
makes code just about unreadible. On the other hand if we don't give
prominence to the fact but just hide it in an obscure footnote, then many
people will get bitten first time (but only then) and come complaining to
R-help and I will write more tetchy little notes like this one...

centos friends?
...a great deal of argy-bargy on this list when the 5.6 update was slow
arriving. I don't want to go there, I was happy to see it when it arrived, as
I always am when there's an update.
The impression I got was that the maintainers and packagers were working as
hard as they could and were tetchy about being nagged, being unable to do
more. Fair enough, but we need not adopt the status quo entirely.

R-beta: S Compatibility (again)

To be more specific, the R substitute() is much more limited
than the S version and coercion to mode "{", "call" or
"function" are unavailable, and function objects are not
subsetable. as.call is useless and as.function only exists to
issue a rather tetchy error message.
For example, as far as I can see it is impossible to write a
version of the S function deriv() for R, short of getting down
to brass tacks and writing a new primitive into the base code,
but even then you can't extend it, of course.

Need to test serial port connection
I recently bought a new UPS, and I''m attempting to use nut to monitor it.
Following setup instructions everything seemed to go well until it came to
testing the connection, which failed.
There is just one serial connector on the computer, so I set it to
monitor /dev/ttyS0. Either that is wrong, or communication is failing.
I''ve been told to try minicom to monitor it,
