troubleshooting new dovecot installation
Hello,
I'm setting up a new mail server using freebsd 6.2, postfix, dovecot with
SASL and, eventually, squirrelmail.
I've gone through
http://wiki.dovecot.org/TestPop3Installation
the program is running, plain works over telnet from local host or from a
remote machine. I can do stat and retr commands.
however, when I try to use the login method
(that is what the command
1 login username password
part is, isn't it?)
all I get is:
-ERR Unknown command.
even with auth_v...

...ovecot: auth: Debug: client passdb out: CONT??? 1???
dovecot: auth: Debug: client in: CONT<hidden>
dovecot: auth: Debug: passwd(xxx,xxx,<RFp0lMFHHotLGJAC>): lookup
dovecot: auth: Debug: client passdb out: FAIL??? 1??? user=xxx ?? user_disabled
So it's something with passdb?
3. In TestPop3Installation I can't get past the "Check that it's allowing remote logins" section. telnet gives me an error:
-ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed.
which I expect, because I have telnet turned off. Does that mean I can't use plaintext authentication?
Thanks,
Bob

Post login script issue with pop3 protocol
Hi, all.
I want to track user last login data (ip address, login date, etc)
with dovecot, followed dovecot tutorial[1], and it now works with
IMAP, but failed with POP3. i don't know why.
My script:

LDAP_BASEDN='o=domains,dc=iredmail,dc=org'
BIND_DN='cn=vmailadmin,dc=iredmail,dc=org'
BIND_PW='plain_passwd'

when the user has no home directory
A user on our server for some reason didn't have a home directory. As
a result, the pop3 server was complaining. Apple's Mail app reported
that the server said:
The attempt to send data to the server "(null)" failed.
It would be nice if the server would say something to the effect that
the connection failed because the user account has no home directory.
Thanks

permissions/access to the various directories and files and pipes, etc,
and in the process starting to learn how this thing works.
After searching in web-land I seem to have overcome those issues and
dovecot and postfix both start and accept connections now
(http://wiki2.dovecot.org/TestPop3Installation).
However when I check to see if I can authenticate I get Authentication
Failed. At the time of these login attempts there are no messages added
to syslog or mail.log, dovecot log entries are below.
Note I redacted my test user and password values to 'xxxxx', and my
domain value to ...
