Samba + Winbind : Kerberos Tickets
...ster (Samba+CTDB+etcd), and
we (presently) using Winbind. We use AD. We're finding that the domain join
(or kerberos ticket renewal) is unreliable. Every day we find Samba/Winbind
is no longer joined to the domain. Now, we're in a bit of a learning curve
here, and automating everything with Terraform + Ansible. We have yet to
produce a stable environment with respect to domain join, though the file
systems themselves seem fine.
One challenge is the vast array of (frequently inconsistent or inaccurate)
documentation on the topic of Samba, different ways to do the same things,
etc. So part of ou...

Slow connects due to out-of-context DNS lookup
Ok, so my situation :
Connecting to internal machines via a bastion server in AWS.
Because I'm raising and tearing down the infrastructure a lot at this
stage with Terraform, the IP addresses change.
For the management subnet, I have a private DNS zone defined, and a
public zone with a record for the bastion server.
What I wanted ; to just be able to define a config entry thus :
---
Host graylog
Hostname graylog.management
ProxyCommand ssh -q -W %h:%p user a...

...er cloning.
The more complex your machine is setup, the more complex this tasks
becomes. It is as simple as that, but certainly not impossible.
In any case I would advice to invest time in creating a repeatable setup
/ config mechanism for every type of server you have. Use Ansible,
Saltstack, Terraform, Chef etc. or just bash scripts. That makes the
machine itself and its software + configs disposable. When it breaks,
just run the code against a fresh base-OS and you are back in business.
The only thing still required is a good backup of your data and a
**tested** restore procedure!

Cloning a volume via storage XML
...ith the fix applied this simply creates an empty volume of
the given size. Granted this has no information about the snapshot so I
was sceptical that this would be enough in the first place.
If the vol-clone is not an option right now via volume xml it's not
that wild as I could just patch the terraform-libvirt-provider to do
the task beforehand but I wanted to know if it there exists an option
for libvirt to do it automatically when provided with an xml. I can't
find any options in the storage xml documentation so my guess would be
no.
Kind regards,
Lennart Weller

Host key verification (known_hosts) with ProxyJump/ProxyCommand
...ittle service? not sure of its long-term stability
though for production use, but one to have a closer look at and keep in
the memory bank.
It's not so much the DNS admin frowning on its use. I think the subnets
involved are /24s and our public DNS infrastructure is Amazon AWS
managed via Terraform, so it could be scripted if we wanted such detail
to be publicly visible. (And we do have a couple of private IPs visible
on our domain -- mostly so Let's Encrypt can validate the host exists.)
The biggest impediment is the constrained nature of the routers that
we're using as bastion...

Just like Microsoft, Samba doesn't recommend using a DC for other
services and running it in some form of VM doesn't make it different.
