How to measure mode (central tendancy)
What is the name of the function to give me the mode (central tendancy) of a numeric variable that can be negative? [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Shortest RFC ever: I propose we rename files using `.TXT` extension to use `.txt`
Why? Because we have a mixture scattered about the codebase, but only a very few with `.TXT`. I like consistency. It makes my obsessive tendancies happy. Is this important? Nope. Why am I asking first? Because its possible someone, somewhere will be disrupted by this so I figured I'd ask first. -Chandler -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

Logging password failures
Doesn't Samba log login failures? I'd like them logged, preferrably (at least to start with) with the tried id/password-pair. Do I have to get my hands dirty with the source or has someone done this before me? Thanks // Jonas

Fwd: Re: Another ue for Recoll/Xapian? - AI/Eliza
.... I think that there has been work about improving search engines with semantic models ("concepts") as long as search has existed (much before internet existed). As far as I know, nothing really convincing has ever emerged. Maybe things are more mature now, but it seems that the general tendancy is more towards using sophisticated statistics than explicit semantic models, of which humans are apparently still the exclusive masters. So no real idea, but if you have something more precise in mind, I'm all ready to assist with what Recoll and Xapian knowledge I may have ! Cheers, jf -...

[cfe-dev] Shortest RFC ever: I propose we rename files using `.TXT` extension to use `.txt`
I mean, I can try to get these to not be "renames" in svn... but surely modern windows SVN clients handle this correctly? (and git clienst?) RFC for f18+runtimes in LLVM
Hi, everyone, As you may know, NVIDIA has developed an open-source Fortran frontend for LLVM (http://flang-compiler.org), which consists of the flang frontend itself along with the corresponding Fortran runtime library. The existing frontend's code is mostly written in C, and while a production-quality implementation, does not follow modern software-engineering practices. Our long-standing

Problems since upgrading 2.2 to 3
...occurs when the server is otherwise being used - it is noticeable in that the Windows clients freeze for roughly 30 seconds whilst attempting to access the server. The above error message also appears in the log. Secondly, printers shared by the server (using CUPS as printer system), have the tendancy to "disappear" from being shared after a week or so; they reappear if smbd is restarted. Any ideas? Thanks, Alex Meaden, Xelam Internet Services.

help with multivariate analysis
dear R users, I need some help for multivariate analysis. I have 2 anaesthetic treatment groups (20 patients/group) where I register heart frequency and pressure for 60 min (repeated measures every 5 minutes). I would like to perform a test to check if treatments are different in controlling freq and pressures during the anaesthesia, but i would like to have also an overall measure and not

Recommendations for IMAP Voicemail
imapsync seems a very interesting tool. Thanks for sharing this. Now I'm still curious to learn if moving from local file storage to cloud IMAP storage is still resilient to short network outages (without IMAP replication). gam() in Splus and R
Hi, Is there any difference in the gam() function in R and Splus? I just tried to do an Ace Plot (plotting the result of the gam() ) on a dataset. R gave me four (the data set has one response and four explanatory variables) ace plot with perfectly straight lines. I kind of felt that it is highly unlikely, so I tried it in Splus. Using the exact commands Splus gave me four completely

Beryl and Compiz Merge: What's actually going on?
...e difference in structure between the two projects, Beryl and Compiz handle management differently, handle new contributors differently, handle releases differently, handle a LOT of things differently. Frankly I feel if we merged under one of the previous projects (Call it X), then there would be a tendancy to just give everyone from the other project (Call it Y) a developer account, start merging the code from Y and say "Merge done!". This will NOT work, all of us feel pretty strongly that for the new project to succeeed it needs to include the best aspects of both Beryl and Compiz, and und...

graphing and scrolling
Dear R users graphing with plot(x) seams to work for a small length(x), when length(x) is too large it seams to clutter the display, a solution would be to display subsets of x at a time, yet a better way which I hope R supports is to place a sliding bar on the display window to control length(x) and thus the resolution, which will involve auto scaling the y axis as well as automatically

MP3/Vorbis comparision
In my efforts to convince people to hear how good Vorbis is when compared to MP3, I'm gonna be encoding tracks from my CD collection to both formats, then writing them to audio CD, so people don't have to install extra software to hear the difference. Has anyone got some suggested specs for the options for MP3 encoding when using CDex or Chun-Yu's MP3 writer for winamp (preferably in

OT: wifi, phone, power in India and Malaysia
A not so technical friend in India is shopping for a laptop. He often travels and stays months in Malaysia and so needs to be able to use the laptop there as well. He typically connects to the internet via wifi, but sometimes must use a telephone line (yes, with a modem). And of course there will be times when he has to plug into mains power to recharge the battery. So to be able to fully use

[LLVMdev] confusion w.r.t. scalar evolution and nuw
I've been doing some digging in this area (scev, wrapping arithmetic), learning as much as I can, and have reached a point where I'm fairly confused about the semantics of nuw in scalar evolution expressions. Consider the following program: define void @foo(i32 %begin) { entry: br label %loop loop: %idx = phi i32 [ %begin, %entry ], [ %idx.dec, %loop ] %idx.dec = sub nuw i32
