Samba performance on Fast Ethernet networks when linked to Win95
...on on a fast ethernet network.
If any of you could have some ideas or suggestions , please mail me (cc:
teo@flex.ro) because I am not (yet) on this mail list.
First of all, may I present you :

Pentium Pro 200 MHz, 64 Mb RAM
2 Gb SCSI HDD Fujitsu
Allied Telesyn 10/100 Ethernet card, UTP
Linux 20.32 + Samba 1.9.17p4
2. THE WORKSTATION
Pentium 100 MHz, 16 Mb RAM

UA - number assignment
My problem is simple and I've issued it about 3 weeks ago. I want the
UAs to authenticate with a number to the SIP server. Is this possible?
For example, I configured an AT-RG613TX (Allied Telesyn Residential
Gateway). In its configuration it is not possible for me to skip
specifying a number (ex. 102) along with the username. I've looked into
the source code (SIP implementation) of Asterisk and, as I figured out,
it is not possible to tell Asterisk the number the user has.
The ques...

Q: Controlling access at the Ethernet level
...de, even win'95 with patch from
microsoft.com. There is could be problem with MAC OS - i didn't find
pptp-client for it but it should be, i think. Also FreeBSD and Linux
has pptp-clients. And the last, you can use cheap hardware
pptp-clients in situations like with MAC OS for example Allied Telesyn
AR-221E.

Ethernet Channel Bank idea
Anyone ever thought about an Ethernet based channel bank? Basically a
rack mount set of 24 IAXys? That would be cool, IMO. No wrangling with
zaptel, etc. IAX as the * <-> Channel bank protocol.
Just an idea...

Bad performance on samba server
I have installed a samba server (1.9.17p4 Linux 2.0.36 from redhat 5.0)
on a dual pentiumII 350 64Mram with two
ultra wide scsi disk drives on a 100Mbit port of a 16x10Mbit + 2x100Mbit
Allied Telesyn switch .The copying operations work at quite same speed
even I copy from Samba server or a Win9x Station if I try to open a
Word doc from server it is much, much slower ( aprox 20 times slower
)that opening the same document from other Win9X station of the network
Where can be the problem ?...

GrandStream Budgetone Phone & DHCP & General Observations
Symptom: Phone after about 15mins will stop functioning
Problem: DHCP lease renewed but default route dropped
Fix: Assign a static ip and problem is resolved. Upgrade to new firmware once it is released
It turn's out that these phones have a few issue in 1.0.3.81 firmware. The phone may stop transmitting packets if configured with DHCP, if DHCP is being provided by certain devices. Netopia

VLAN martians
I''m playing around with VLAN''s and I have a VLAN capable (layer 2) smart
switch. I see a steady stream of martians in the logfile if I have the
routefilter option set on the loc zone interfaces in
/etc/shorewall/interfaces. I have two interfaces in the loc zone, eth1
and vlan2 respectively. vlan2 is an 802.1q trunk going towards the switch.
Is this the expected behavior in
