printers... (HP)
I can't remember if I asked here - I've got more than one printer, HP, laser, builtin JetDirect. When I go there in a browser, I see the basic thing, but I can't get to the networking page. It says that it wants a password, no user name. It doesn't accept anything. Last week, a co-worker reset one to factory defaults... and it comes up with the same thing. Looking around on the

VNC
I'm trying to set up a VNC server using the instructions at http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux-and-open-source/linux-101-easy-vnc-server-setup/ . I am up to step 6: Step 6: Edit iptables In order for the VNC connections to get through, you must allow them with iptables. To do this, open up the file /etc/sysconfig/iptables and add the line: -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m...

Slow update time for Desktop icons
I've got one user that I just put onto the new Samba 3.0.8 server. He's on WinXP SP1. He has a ton of icons and things on his desktop (39M worth of data according to his profile) but I'm not sure if that is a problem. When he logs in, a few of his icons which point to network applications have only the default Windows shortcut image. If he right-clicks the Desktop and clicks

RODC and LDAP via Simple Authentication fails
Dear all, setting up a DMZ environment I was thinking to use an RODC there for user authentication. One of the application in the DMZ needs to access the directory via LDAP. When I tried to connect to the RODC using LDAP with simple bind, I always received the following error ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49)         additional info: 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903A9, comment:

Zimbra vs. Scalix vs. et. al.
Well, I stumbled onto zimbra.... I have a Scallix system built, but still have some rough edges to try to smooth. Like the way it works with sendmail, no dnsbl's will work as sendmail sees all mail as coming from locohost (scalix). Still battling that one which is when I ran across Zimbra. So, this made me start wondering. Are there other exchange server-like products out there? Has

Utility to zero unused blocks on disk
...nly thing to use on SSDs. >>> Writing a pile of zeros just increases wear (minor negative) >>> but also doesn't actually set the cells to the state required >>> to accept a new write, Secure erase of an SSD, or any solid state device, is problematic. See: http://www.techrepublic.com/article/erasing-ssds-security-is-an-issue/ The CSE requires physical destruction of these devices through pulverisation or incineration. See: https://cse-cst.gc.ca/en/system/files/pdf_documents/itsg06-eng.pdf The USDOD leaves disposal protocols to the individual commands. Essentially, due to...

...tion, unfortunately. > > Did I miss anything that prevents my scenario to work by design? > Thanks a lot for your help! > > Best regards > Johannes > > I wouldn't do this, the DC (RODC or otherwise) would have to be a global catalogue. Try reading this: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/solutionbase-deploying-domain-controllers-in-a-dmz/ In short, you need to setup a domain in the DMZ and then setup a trust between this domain and your other domain. Spicy stuff on web development
Hi all, The link contains a stingy article on AJAX and other somewhat browser dependant stuff. http://techrepublic.com.com/5254-6257-0.html?forumID=99&threadID=184332&messageID=1963135&id=2926438 Being a webdev myself and also a diehard perfectionist, I could relate to some of it. Let me state that the article does NOT represent my opinion, nor is it to fire up a discussion!! It is merely an FYI...

Identifying physical disks
I am sure this is really simple. I have a setup of 2 disks (sda, sdb) which are outwardly identical, and are mirrors of each other. Together they form 3 raid1 devices. Both disks can boot. Now sda has bad sectors, and I should replace it. But which one of the physical disks is sda?? The machine boots fine from either one of the disks, (and the booting disk of course is always called sda).

roaming profile does not work for "Domain Admins"
Hello list, I am facing an issue which I cannot explain myself. The roaming profiles don't work for users that are members of the group "Domain Admins". The [profiles] share on the member server was configured exactly as explained on the wiki for roaming profiles. It works like a charm for all domain users, *BUT*: if a user is member of the group "Domain Admins" it

I downloaded the .pdf version of "Thinking in C++" and I've begun to read that and I did yum groupinstall 'Development Tools' I'm a Newbie Desktop user, jumping into the deep end of the pool. Should I try to learn vi (Vim) (which obviously will help me, if I ever need to administer a remote box) or install Emacs or something else, for the gcc editor? An easy learning

Hi, - OpenSuse 42.2 - Samba Version 4.4.2-11.3.1-3752-SUSE-SLE_12-x86_64 I'm using samba for file sharing, where users have some control of the shares. This is a standalone server All works fine, the user was created and added on the samba host with smbpasswd -a <user> *The problem is*, when the samba password is changed using smbpasswd <user> , the Windows machines no

Dealing with an unreliable remote
'Lo. I've run into a frustrating issue when trying to synchronize a directory hierarchy over a reliable (but slow) connection to an unreliable remote. Basically, I have the following: http://mvn-repository.io7m.com/com/io7m/ This is a set of nested directories containing binaries and sources for projects I develop/maintain. Every time a new release is made, I deploy the binaries and
