Debian 3.0.23b tbdsam guest panic
Hi All,
Just upgraded a test box to 3.0.23b and discovered some changes that cause a
panic.
I had an smb.conf with passdb backend = tbdsam guest
The guest bit now causes panic action.
log.smbd complains ... "No builtin nor plugin backend for tdbsam guest found"
Either the build options have changed or the guest operative has issues.
Works OK without guest, but it's been necessary to use it in the past on
occasions....

Weird behaviour of one Win7 user
...auth/auth_sam.c:493(check_sam_security)
check_sam_security: make_server_info_sam() failed with
'NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER
This happens from any machine the user concerned tries to connect the domain.
Other Win7 users do not have the problem regardless what machine they use.
The user exists in tbdsam and in the unix passwd file as does the machine.
Everything worked well until Friday, when we experienced this problem. Friday
the user first experienced this problem, however after several retries to log
in the domain it suddenly worked again.
Today (Monday) the user couldn't get his user p...

problem with login script not running as one user
Okay, have a small office running Samba on MDK 10.1 and XP workstations:
samba-server-3.0.10-0.1.101mdk
samba-client-3.0.10-0.1.101mdk
samba-vscan-clamav-3.0.10-0.1.101mdk

Using tbdsam as our backend. I recently added a new user, however this user
does not run the regular login script for some reason
net use h: \\FILESERVER\homes /YES
net use p: \\FILESERVER\public /YES
net use z: \\FILESERVER\archive /YES
The only drive being mapped is the home directory and it...

PDC and "group" question
Hi All,
I just upgraded a workstation server to a PDC server.
I am using tbdsam as my user database.
Question 1: As a workgroup server, I created my groups
in /etc/group (groupadd). Is this still the case?
Do I also need to tell Samba about a different database
for groups?
Question 2: occasionally I get asked for the user
with "administrator's" privileges. D...

Reference Documentation Server
.../docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/StandAloneServer.html#simplynice
Samba (smbd) crashes with a "failed to get pdb methods for backend guest"
message. After searching the mail archives I have my doubts as to whether
the conf line "passdb backend = guest" is correct. Tried "tbdsam" but then I
run into all kinds of access challenges from the clients.
Because this is an _embedded_ system with limited user management, we want
samba to ignore all access operations. I.e. don't do any PAM, Unix
user/password checks. Just allow read access to the directory from any

Group membership problem migrating from Samba 2 to Samba 3
Hi,
I'm building up a new server to replace an old one running Samba2. The new
server is running Samba 3 and I'm having a problem getting it to recognise my
groups in /etc/groups.
I'm using the old smbpasswd backend, not the new tbdsam database.
I've copied my smb.conf, and the files from /usr/local/private across to the
new machine, as well as /etc/group and migrated the user accounts accross I
can login OK from a workstation, but I can't get access to any shares other
than the home directory & netlogon.

Capital letters in usernames
...n annoying problem regarding capital letters
in usernames.
I have three users whose usernames begin with a capital, and I'd
really like to fix this so that all usernames are lower case, for
consistency and to avoid confusion if they use other services provided
by the linux box.
(I'm using tbdsam backend, with Samba 3.0.22 as PDC.)
I've tried using usermod to change the user's UNIX username. But once
this is done, the user is unable to log in.
I'm not able to to change the SMB username - it's not an option in
pdbedit as far as I can tell, and 'net user rename' fail...

Snow Leopard server as PDC: problems binding linux machines
...ying to work out why.
The setup that worked: OS X Tiger (10.4) Server as PDC. Linux servers (a variety of flavours, from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to SLES 11 SP2) getting user information from the server by LDAP and using SMB to export file shares, handing authentication requests back to the OS X machine by tbdsam.
What broke it: Updating the OS X machine to Snow Leopard Server.
What broke: the older (Samba version 3.0.28) linux boxes can still bind to the PDC and hand mount requests ok. The newer machines (3.6.3) can't bind to the PDC and can't authenticate mount requests.
On a new machine, if I...

Forcing Users to change passwords.
Hi,
Samba-3 with LDAP backend is capable in this. I'm using it and it works.
All you have to do, is to use LDAP and set proper account policies:
$ pdbedit -P "bad lockout attempt" -C 5
(after 5 wrong password, user account will be locked out - samba sets
password hashes to ***NOPASSWORD*** and user is unable to logon).
$ pdbedit -P "min password length" -C 9
# password
