Suggestions for improved checks on CRAN/R
...N maintainers, R core team,
Here are some suggestions to prevent some issues I found in several
packages on CRAN. Some of these issues have been reported to their
maintainers, but still I believe it would be desirable to enforce
these on CRAN or in the corresponding R CMD.
- Checks for undeclared sysreqs. There are packages that do not
declare some system requirement. E.g., bioacoustics requires fftw and
soxr, but no sysreqs are declared; ijtiff links agains jpeg, but it's
not declared; there are a handful of packages linking against GSL and
not declaring it, such as BayesSAE, BayesVarSel, bnp...

[Patch[ xl problems with xendomains
...ck at my original submission (2 years ago), I reported the
issues against 4.1.1. As previously stated this had more problems
because of differing output of xl list -l, which appears to be employed
by xendomains. I haven''t thoroughly tested the patch against every
combination of domains sysreq''d, etc, but it appears to work for auto
start, save and restore.
Thanks for reading and I hope this makes sense,
Ian.

ZFS system requirements
Hi, this says that opensolaris only requires 512MB ram: http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/IPS/sysreq.html
This says 1GB ram and a 64bit processor are recommended: http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide#Memory_and_Swap_Space
Am I going to have problems if I run opensolaris and zfs at the minimum requirements?

Send magic-sysrq from virtual serial console?
I am using CentOS 5.6 as a KVM host. My guests are running CentOS
5.6 with the only console being a virtual serial console. The guests
are configured so magic-sysreq can be used to debug kernel issues.
However, in order to send magic-sysrq from a serial port, I need to
send a break. How does one send a break on the virtual console
serial port provided by KVM/libvirt to guests?
Thanks,
David

system lockup when hammering ext3 partition
...Maxtor disk with about 12G free.
The system locks up hard (no ping, no capslock light) after a while.
Different place every time.
Built 2.4.20 with ext3 debugging. Set debug level to 3--no lockup.
While writing this, reran test with debug level 2--locks up. I'm
going to build with the magic sysreq key and see if any further
elucidation is possible.

GFS availability in Centos5
Hi,
does Centos-5 support the GFS filesystem and the RedHat cluster suite? I did not find anything in
the FAQs.

The system is pseudo dead when hang-up system in the centos 5.3 .
When I hang-up the system, then the screem is black. But the power light
is brightness. and the disk light is bright sometimes.
When I press any key, the screem is still black. Only can do is to press
down power button for several seconds to power off the notebook. Is there
the bug of the Centos?

PROBLEM: new kernel 3.15.0-rc8 hangs completely with CONFIG_DRM_NOUVEAU enabled
...ddenly
and unexpectedly hangs during these actions, the mouse does not
response, the keyboard does not response, the display manager freezes
completely (I can say that by a CPU usage tool that runs in my Xfce, and
it freezes as well, so it's not just the input devices getting
disconnected). ALT+SysReq+s/b does not work, syncing/rebooting fails, it
does absolutely nothing. Disabling the CONFIG_DRM_NOUVEAU flag and
recompiling removes the hang completely. I can reproduce the problem by
just rebooting and logging in as descriped above.

Hmmm... thanks. I'm sure I've heard about the magic sysreq, but had
forgotten, never used it. I'll try that if this happens again.

fifo: SCHED_ERROR 0a [CTXSW_TIMEOUT]
I begin to find a way that help me investigate fifo: SCHED_ERROR 0a [CTXSW_TIMEOUT] errors.
See https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-nouveau/-/issues/339
I believe this affects mostly Fermi, Kepler and Maxwell1 graphic cards.
I'd like first to describe a bit how I proceed, then talk about separating this issue in many.
I am working on Gnome Debian Testing.

IPMASQ and lock-up of all terminals
[mod: This is the second time in a week that someone asks this
question: is it a new attack? It sure looks to me like "userland" has
completely locked up, but that the kernel is still working. As an
isolated case, my diagnosis is: You probably have a bad block in your
/bin/login program or something like that. When two people report this
in a week, it's starting to become unlikely

Diagnosing random hangs
I have many different centos machines that are hanging
regulary. I believe this is due to something our application
is doing - not a centos specific problem.
When the machines hang, there is no access to the console
or remote access(ssh, rsh, etc).
Any tips on debugging this issue? It is becoming quite a
show stopper as we migrate our product from Solaris to
Linux.

system unresponsive
In the past I've found that the console may have blanked (due to time) and
when the system locked up/hung it won't unblank. Booting with
"consoleblank=0" on the kernel command line will ensure that whatever is
printed to the console (oops, panic, etc) will be there for you to see when
you connect.
I've had intermittent success in that type of situation with the SysRq
key(s),
