syncronizing file content into device content
...tition) of that exact size. The target device is already mostly of that content, but a few block have been changed. I want to restore the device contents back to what the file originally was. I'm trying to find a way to have rsync's write end open the device as a file and do its thing to syncronize the content efficiently so I don't have to transfer the entire content each time by some other means. But rsync is very persistent in replacing the device node file with just a regular file, which because the file is new, causes it to transfer the content of the original file, filling up the f...

Using rsync to syncronize two unmounted disk partitions
Hi everybody, I have been using rsync for quite some time, and I've realized it is a fantastic tool. As it is able to syncronize two CD images, I was wondering, if I could do that with a harddisk partition. Would it be possible to syncronize two partitions at device level somehow? I mean using: # rsync /dev/hda8 /dev/hda9 skipping non-regular file "hda8" where /dev/hda8 and /dev/hda9 are two unmounted and...

Syncronizing two IMAP servers
I spend time in two places, in different countries. I have a local network in each place, with IMAP servers on each network. I collect email by fetchmail from various servers, and read email on my laptop with KMail. I tried using just one IMAP server, but this proved impractical. So I have two collections of the same sub-folders, on the two servers. I have two questions: 1. Is there a simpler

But when I check whether the unix password is also changed or not I see it is not changed. Hence the two passwords are not syncronized. What is the problem? ps:I have the following smb.conf parts: unix password sync = yes passwd chat = *"New password:"* %n\n *"Retype new password:"* %n\n *"Success"*a passwd program = /usr/sbin/passwd min password length = 6 passwd chat debug = t...

OCFS2 and direct-io writes
.... With these changes, a single/local OCFS2 filesystem will allow me to write/create files using large, direct-io. All the write requests go straight through to the storage. And the write performance is very close to that of XFS. But, in a distributed environment the inode->i_size does not get syncronized with the other nodes in the cluster. The direct-io path does not syncronize the inode->i_size. Would it be possible to safely to update the i_size for all nodes in a cluster, without causing any races or other problems? If so, does anyone have any suggestions as to how and where in the code I...

Kernel panic w/ DAHDI 2.x/Digium TE220B
I've seen this consistently on three systems, with three different cards, and multiple versions of DAHDI. At first I thought the issue only occurred on newer, Nehalem-based, systems, but I reproduced it on a Core 2 Duo box as well. I've tested with dahdi-linux 2.2.0.2, dadhi- linux-complete 2.0.0+2.0.0, 2.1.0.2+2.1.0.2, and 2.2.0.2+2.2.0. The card is a Digium TE220B which uses the

rsync is slowing down
The cause is, of course, that the tree being syncronized ie getting larger, so of course rsync is slowing down. But in the case of my particular file tree, there is a way it could be speeded up, but this would obviously also need a change in the rsync protocol to accomplish it. Any tree that has major unchanged subbranches would benefit from this. Th...

Samba domain time sync woes (Debian Bookworm)
...e, and I continued to provide these after conversion from nt4-style domain to samba AD-DC. The NTP records are provided by DHCP, and are configured in the GPO, both with regional differences (choosing the local NTP servers within each location). None of our AD-DC run NTP server by itself, but all syncronize to the same NTP servers. Password Syncronization with Mapped users
I'm not sure if this is supported or not, but I can't get it to work. I'm trying to get the smb password and the unix password to sync for mapped users. I have have 'unix password sync' turned on and I have the username mapping file set up. When I change a users password in windows (where the username is the same in windows and linux) the password changes just fine. When I
