target device is already mostly of that content, but a few block

what the file originally was. I'm trying to find a way to have
rsync's write end open the device as a file and do its thing to
syncronize the content efficiently so I don't have to transfer the
entire content each time by some other means. But rsync is very
persistent in replacing the device node file with just a regular

content of the original file, filling up th...

Using rsync to syncronize two unmounted disk partitions
Hi everybody,
I have been using rsync for quite some time, and I've realized it is a
fantastic tool. As it is able to syncronize two CD images, I was
wondering, if I could do that with a harddisk partition. Would it be
possible to syncronize two partitions at device level somehow?
I mean using:
# rsync /dev/hda8 /dev/hda9
skipping non-regular file "hda8"
where /dev/hda8 and /dev/hda9 are two unmounted...

Syncronizing two IMAP servers
...s,
and read email on my laptop with KMail.
I tried using just one IMAP server, but this proved impractical.
So I have two collections of the same sub-folders, on the two servers.
I have two questions:
1. Is there a simpler way of organizing my email?
2. Given the current method, is there a way of syncronizing folders
on the two servers?

Syncronize large file
i have several large .tar backup file on the server
it's about 2 GB and 4 GB
the question is, if i syncronize using rsync to other
computer, rsync will re-transfer the whole
1 big file, or only transfer part of the file ?
or maybe i should reduce the size, by splitting the file
into 650 Mb each.
or it's the same as if transfering via FTP ?
thanks

password syncronization
...word is really changed.
Since when I try to communicate samba server through windows 98
installed computer I see there is no problem. (Since we can see the shared
documents.)
But when I check whether the unix password is also changed or not I see
it is not changed. Hence the two passwords are not syncronized.
What is the problem?
ps:I have the following smb.conf parts:

If you are using plain maildir, then I think you could just use rsync to
synchronise the two sets of folders and files. I guess you would need to
exclude from the rsync operation the dovecot-specific files (indexes and
so forth) and allow dovecot to update t...

An old winbind syncronization question
...ding the primary server from the offsite backups, how can
I ensure that the winbind mapping is carried over to avoid the same
problem as #1?
I researched the list archives and saw mention that this was being
worked on back in 2001. Has any progress been made and I just missed
the release? If syncronization is still impossible, if I dump
winbindd_idmap.tdb to my backup server, would restoring that be enough
to get everything back to square 1?
Thanks in advance.

OCFS2 and direct-io writes
....
With these changes, a single/local OCFS2 filesystem will allow me to write/create files using
large, direct-io. All the write requests go straight through to the storage. And the write performance
is very close to that of XFS.
But, in a distributed environment the inode->i_size does not get syncronized with the other nodes in
the cluster. The direct-io path does not syncronize the inode->i_size.
Would it be possible to safely to update the i_size for all nodes in a cluster, without causing any
races or other problems?
If so, does anyone have any suggestions as to how and where in the cod...

rsync is slowing down
The cause is, of course, that the tree being syncronized ie getting larger,
so of course rsync is slowing down. But in the case of my particular file
tree, there is a way it could be speeded up, but this would obviously also
need a change in the rsync protocol to accomplish it. Any tree that has
major unchanged subbranches would benefit from this....

Samba domain time sync woes (Debian Bookworm)

Here is the logic that I am trying to achieve. I have a User Model and

I'm trying to get the smb password and the unix password to sync for
