rsync as a bakcup tool and the case of rotated logs
...comparing files through their md5 signature instead of by their name, that way rsync would see that /backup/syslog.198.gz is the same as /var/log/syslog.197.gz and not retransfer it, 2) create hard-links to identical files in --backup-dir=/backup/incremental-2002-11-27 when is detects that /server/sylog.138.gz is the actually the same as /backup/current/syslog.137.gz, Thanks in advance for your insight, -- PHEDRE: Elle s'en est punie, et fuyant mon courroux, A cherch? dans les flots un supplice trop doux. openssh 3.2.2p1 problem on Solaris
...asically, but I get ... debug1: Entering interactive session. Warning: no access to tty (Inappropriate ioctl for device). Thus no job control in this shell. and also May 20 18:01:01 localhost sshd[5753]: error: open /dev/tty failed - could not set controlling tty: No such device or address in sylog, and when I exit the shell via ^D, I have to ^C, too, to get back to the original shell. I think the problem is not on the client side, because it works fine when connecting to another Sol8 box (running openssh 3.1p1, compiled with gcc). /dev/tty is a link to /devices/pseudo/sy at 0:tty crw-r...

syslog patch
Hi I've written a small patch to logger.c which enables * to log to syslog ased on a setting in the logger.conf file. However, Asterisk uses the same macros as sys/sylog does. Changing the asterisk defines won't help since they also do the macro expansion to filename & linenumber. Not being an experienced C programmer what is the normal way to solve this? Change all asterisk LOG_WARNING/NOTICE/ERROR to AST_LOG_WARNING? or include a modified version of /sys/...

Perhaps a Perl problem (Re: Syslog timezone issue)
...orks (which > do not even do an exec, so they should be identical to the parent) > randomly switch to the other timezone. It just occurred to me that these particular daemons are perl programs using Sys::Syslog, so maybe the problem is there. The forked children continue using the same Sys::Sylog object created by the parent, though, so that still leaves me wondering about the inconsistent timezone after the fork.

Some DNAT''s work, some don''t
We''ve just upgraded to a new firewall machine, and a new version of Shorewall. We''re now on 2.04; previous version was 1.3.9b (!). So I''m pretty sure whatever problems we''re having are related to the big version jump. We''re using config files that exactly match our old (working) configuration (IOW, these are things which _were_ working on the old

oplocks and Excel
I have a small business client with a new samba file server. It's CentOS 4.2 and Samba samba-3.0.10-1.4E.2. When they save open Excel files from Windows, they are prompted to overwrite the existing file. I mean, when they click the little disk icon or use Ctrl-S or File--Save. Excel would normally just write over the file, not check with an "are you sure?" prompt. But that's
