Fwd: Re: [friday topic]: what exactly is statistical computing

I have had students, some sent by other faculty members, in my class
on statistical computing thinking they were going to learn how to do statistical
analysis using the computer. There was a clash of expectations between what
they thought they were taking and what I had in the syllabus.

Who asking users to install native DirectX?
More and more poor clueless users getting to nowhere installing that stuff according to some howtos. Who are writing those? And why are they directing people to install it in the first place?
The only person I've found who created that howto everyone links to - Tom Wickline states EXPLICITLY THAT THIS IS FOR TESTING PURPOSES ONLY!!! AND NOT TO BE USED WITH ANY REAL LIFE APPLICATION!

OSX client, Linux server, permissions problem
I've been using samba for some time and have always had a good experience.
I decided to try and configure my home network to let all my computers
talk to the samba share.
I'm stuck on one part where my OSX client, when creating new
files/directories, won't create them writeable by the group.
I've tried what seems like every combination of directory mask, force

The ease of use of Rails is not lost in WebObjects. At the same time
the WebObjects application server increases scalability through an
elegant data persistence layer which spans the request response loop
and can be shared across all requests.

I'm using it in a graduate methods course in psychology here.
See my web page for the syllabus. I'm not sure how many
students will continue to use it, or revert to SPSS (or,
worse, JMP-IN) to do their data analysis. But I am sure
that it is more than zero! Jon

Hi,
The department of economics at our university (Budapest) is planning a
course on numerical methods in economics. They are trying to decide
which software to use for that, and I would like to advocate R. The
other alternative is Matlab.
I have found comparisons in terms of computational time for matrix
algebra, but I don't think that is relevant: the bottleneck for
economists is usually
