Is Speex realy patent free?
Well, apparently, no pure software solution can be patented (hardware can),
least that's what I saw on the national news here in the UK 2 weeks ago.

Is Speex realy patent free?
Hi all,

i have readed all the realy sad stuff about software patents in
europe and what allread exists. There is one side related to speex
and i dont know if this is allready discussed here.
Take a look at:
http://swpat.ffii.org/patents/effects/voip/index.en.html
Is speex realy petant free or does patent free only means that
is is not patent by the speex authors? Who have checked that
speex doesn't violates patents others? I don't use IP here,
because most patents are only used to prevent other people
to...

Is Speex realy patent free?
...resides in my city have allready accepted
ilegaly over 10000 trival patents on allgorithem and so one, so it
becomes hart to fight them. There are some professor's who say's, that
it is not posible to create a free VoIP solution wihtout breaking some
patents.
Read the stuff at http://www.swpat.ffii.org and you will see that
we - the open source developer - are threaten by patent lawyers
and that this could be the end of any open source software for
a longer time.
See als the petition from eurolinux.org.

I have also thought that every thing is fine, but it is not.

Theora and software patents
...nts.
However, I believe the argument that On2 has not been sued for infringing
the MPEG-patents is a very strong argument. This indicates that you will
not be sued if you use Theora which basically is what people are
interested in knowing.

troll or truth ?
Hello,
I was discussing on the mplayer/mencoder ML about transcodingfrom Divx
to Theora. I got these kind of answers:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.mencoder.user/280
Of course I understoud only 50% of what he said, as well as I am not
really used with codec and video glossary...
But I generally understoud his opinion. What to think? I would like not
to believe him, espacially when

Licensing Question
Hi there,
I am new to Ogg/Theora and am trying to compare several video codecs as part
of my master thesis at the University of Klagenfurt.
Therefore I have a question: will there be any patents problems using
Ogg/Theora in the future? Is/will Ogg/Theora stay free from patents rights?
This would be a great advantage in using Ogg/Theora instead of e.g. H.264
which is covered with numerous

Playback too slow?!
I tried encoding http://home.tange.dk/theora/stream.dump with
http://home.tange.dk/theora/optag-dvd 4. From that I got
http://home.tange.dk/theora/dvd-4.theora.ogg.
mplayer stream.dump works fine, but when playing the theora encoded file
on my 2 GHz computer both mplayer and xine take 85% of my CPU while X
takes the remaining 15% (i.e. 0% idle time) and the playback is no way
near smooth.

Status of s3tc patent in respect to open-source drivers and workarounds

I recently took inspiration from an article/talk presented by Andrew
Trigell regarding patents where he claims developers often overestimate
the scope of patents
(http://news.swpat.org/2010/03/transcript-tridgell-patents/) because
they fixate on the title and summary instead of the actual claims.
The key point he was making is that in order to infringe a patent you
apparently have to infringe on ALL ELEMENTS of a PRIMARY claim. If you
don't do something in the primary cl...
