Integrity checking NANOBSD images
We have a number of Soekris devices that we will be deploying remotely in semi- hostile physical environments. The remote links are dialup so I dont have a lot of bandwidth available. I want to do integrity checks of the images so that I can detect any tampering of the flash image. If I upload a static sha256 binary to /tmp on the remote box (which is a RAM disk) and then do something

nmap not scanning networks?
Hello! Attempt to scan a network with any method except plain ping results in an error: truss nmap -sT -p 21 '172.19.17.*' [...] sendto(0x4,0x8094200,0,0x0,{ AF_INET 172.19.17.0:0 },0x10) ERR#49 'Can't assign requested address' [...] What's strange that man on send(2) doesn't state that EADDRNOTAVAIL can ever be returned from sendto(). named.conf: query-source address
Hi! I fully understand and second efforts on educating people how to configure BIND to be stong to attacks and keep them from using "query-source address" with "port" option but how about binding named to particular IP address when host has many of them? Using "query-source address" without "port" is the only solution (not speaking of jails here) and safe

Fwd: dhclient and CVE-2011-0997...?
Hi-- Are folks familiar with: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2011-0997 http://www.isc.org/software/dhcp/advisories/cve-2011-0997 http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/04/07/flaw-in-iscs-dhclient-could-allow-remote-code-execution/ Checking http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sbin/dhclient/dhclient.c, I don't see signs that it may have been updated. A patch to man to handle "man.1"...
Hi, all-- I've always thought that specifying sections via "man -s 1 man" or "man 1 man" was ugly, and didn't work very well with filename completion. remotely exploitable vulnerability in lukemftpd / tnftpd
Hi Everyone, http://vuxml.freebsd.org/c4b025bb-f05d-11d8-9837-000c41e2cdad.html A critical vulnerability was found in lukemftpd, which shipped with some FreeBSD versions (4.7 and later). However, with the exception of FreeBSD 4.7, lukemftpd was not built and installed by default. So, unless you are running FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE or specified WANT_LUKEMFTP when building FreeBSD from source, you

ad0: READ command timeout....
This morning I found a frozen box. On the console was this: ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting ata0: resetting devices .. ata0-slave: ATA identify retries exceeded done After reboot, those messages were found in /var/log/messages. I'm running FreeBSD 4.8-RC from Apr 4 10:45:49 EST 2003. Any ideas? -- Dan Langille : http://www.langille.org/

Segfaults from gcc, awk and Zend; advice needed
For some reason I'm getting more or less random segfaults compiling kernels, world or PHP5 on BETA-3 (Python and perl went ok). So far I haven't succeeded building a fresh kernel or world. This system is an Athlon XP with 1MB RAM and 4GB swap, compiling is done in the usual places in /usr, which is a set of two gstriped partitions. Dmesg attached. Previously this system has been

IPFW Problems?
Hi, I have a system with a 4.11 Kernel. Unless I'm doing something very wrong, there seems to be something odd with ipfw. Take the following rules: ipfw add 00280 allow tcp from any to any 22 out via bge0 setup keep- state ipfw add 00299 deny log all from any to any out via bge0 ipfw add 0430 allow log tcp from any to me 22 in via bge0 setup limit src-addr 2 ipfw add 00499 deny log

New entropy source proposal.
Hi. I've been playing a bit with "use sound card as an entropy source" idea. This simple program does what I wanted: http://people.freebsd.org/~pjd/misc/sndrand.tbz The program is very simple, it should be run with two arguments: % sndtest /dev/dspW 1048576 > rand.data This command will generate 1MB of random data. With my sound card: pcm0: <Intel ICH3 (82801CA)>

FreeBSD tar errors on valid empty tar.gz
Seems our current libarchive? That support FreeBSD's tar implementation has a bug where it can create archives it cant read back. This can be seen by simply creating an empty tar.gz file and then trying to expand or list it. In doing the above you get the following error: tar: Unrecognized archive format: Inappropriate file type or format N.B. gtar can list and expand the created file

[SO]HO Software RAID5 server: which implementation should I choice?
Hello, freebsd-stable. Does somebody use some software RAID5 on FreeBSD in real production system? I want to build storage server for my home: RAW photos, multi-layer PhotoShop files and FLAC-encoded music consume a lot of space, and they should be availible both from desktop & notebook. Also, all photo-content is unique, so I need some insuranse from single HDD crash. I understand,

Hardening production servers
Greetings, Apologies if this is not the appropriate list, but my questions are about best practices in maintaining production servers (so I believe I can justify a post in -stable, short of a -release list :) I maintain a modest installation of 6 FreeBSD servers. They're CVSUP'd to RELENG_4_8 (I make buildworld on each individually) and I portupgrade ports as necessary. In an attempt to

recompile sshd with OPIE?
Hi, I'm having trouble getting an answer to the following problem on -questions - I hope someone here has done something similar and can help. I'd like to compile support for FreeBSD OPIE into sshd. Presently I have to use PAM to achieve one-time password support. On a 4.x system I have in /etc/ssh/sshd_config ChallengeResponseAuthentication yes and in /etc/pam.conf sshd auth

malloc does not return null when out of memory
We have a little soekris box running freebsd that uses racoon for key management. It's used for setting up an ipsec tunnel. I noticed that one of these devices lost the tunnel this morning. I looked in the log and saw this Jul 23 01:37:57 m0n0wall /kernel: pid 80 (racoon), uid 0, was killed: out of swap space I reproduced this problem using this code. #include <stdlib.h> int

Sockets stuck in FIN_WAIT_1
I have a rather busy Apache 2.2 server; tons of small & some large requests. It's a standard Dell 2650 server using the bge (broadcom) network driver. I seem to have a rather strange problem where after just a day or so Apache just stops processing new connections. You can connect to port 80, but trying to get Apache to process any data just hangs. There is nothing strange in
