mkswap, lvm and bootbits sectors
Hello,
I am confused by a warning from mkswap :
When making a swap on a LVM volume, I see the following warning :
mkswap: /dev/vg_SDB1/swap_test6_64: warning: don't erase bootbits
sectors on whole disk. Use -f to force.
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1048572 KiB
Is it safe to use mkswap -f in this case ?
(If that matters, the swap is intended for a virtual machine, and
the host where I am using mkswap is a CentOS-6 server.)
Thanks,

How much SWAP Space.
Hi,
I have loaded CentOS 5.6 on HP DL 180G6 2U Rack Server and the
physical RAM is 32 GB. As per
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/ch-swapspace.html
It says it should be 1 x of Physical RAM or less. Not sure about the
"less" word in deciding swap space size
Please suggest/guide further on what all parameters i should decide to
set swap space.

Kaushal

[XEN] using shmfs for swapspace
...question - at the

asked that are answered by the background material i also provide...
*sigh*]
each virtual machine requires (typically) its own physical ram (a chunk
of the host''s real memory) and some virtual memory - swapspace. xen
uses 32mb for its shm guest OS inter-communication.
so, in the case i''m setting up, that''s 5 virtual machines (only one of
which can get away with having only 32mb of ram, the rest require 64mb)
so that''s five lots of 256mbyte swap files.
the memory usage is the...

R computations thrash my system (FreeBSD, K6-233, 64MB). I have to
triple the swapspace before starting, and I wait about an hour for
either rebooting the system or having a lucky outcome. There seems to be
something fundamentally wrong.
It seems I have to move to nmle to get variance components. I did not
manage to translate my problem to mle language yet.
Thanks for any help

RSync hangs up on file transfer
...uSE GNU/Linux, RSync 2.5.6 pv 26):

- -/+ buffers/cache: 78932 177360
Swap: 995988 44560 951428
So both systems have still left swapspace.
I've read through the RSync man-pages and FAQ on the net. There it has been
suggested to play around with some options like blocking and non-blocking-io
and bwlimit. This didn't change anything.
I furthermore did leave RSync alone a whole weekend, but no further files have

converting BMDP 8V mixed model treatment to R ?
...roblem thrashes my system (FreeBSD, K6-233, 64MB). This is particularly
astonishing, as BMDP8V does it's work without problems on an old 24MB uVAX VMS
system in mere 20 seconds CPU time. To run the above R partial solution
I have to wait for about an hour on a freshly loaded R, after making the
swapspace 3times as large as I use in normal work. There must be something
wrong, but I have no idea, how to advance.

Hangs on multiple small files
I am running rsync on win9x (PIII 900, 128MB RAM) between a mapped
network drive and a local drive.
For small folders on this machine rsync works great, but the folder I
am syncronising with has 13GB of data and > 1,000,000 files. Out of
about 20 attempts rsync has only succeded once, all other times it
just seems to hang.
Not much info but any ideas?
Thanks

Adding another swap
Hi ALL,
I have a harddisk with 3 primary partitions and one extended
partitions. Under extented partions , there are 15 partions.
Whole hard disk has been partitioned in a standard way, (i.e NOT LVM)
It has 2GB ram. swap is also 2GB.
Now I want to extend this swap to 4 GB.
If I use dd coomand and create a file with 2GB, Will I be able to
extend the swap witn swapon commnad?
How can I achive

Server crashed using rsync
I'm trying to make a backup using this command
rsync -auvH /home/ /bak --delete --bwlimit=1000 --status
server load has been increased so much and the server crashed, as well
has gone out of memory
My Server is a Dual Xeon 2.0 GHz with 2GB of Memory + 1GB Swap.
Could be that there are too many files, about 5.000.000, to be backed up
?
The way the files are structured make very

load testing and tuning a 4GB RAM server
Hello everyone,
First of all, great job on the 4.8-R. We have been a long standing user of
FreeBSD and are very happy with everything.
Now my question. I am trying to stress test a new Dell PowerEdge server
and find the limits of its hardware and my tuning. Here are the server
stats:
* 2x Xeon 2.8 with SMP compiled, hyperthreading NOT compiled in kernel
* 4 GB of RAM, 8 GB of swap on Raid 1

Memory consumption for rsync -axv --delete
Hi,
I have been using rsync for many years and never had any kind of problem.
Lately I am running out of RAM trying to do an incremental backup to a box
that only has 2G of RAM. The entire directory structure I'm mirroring is
about 200G of files. A minority of subdirectories have many files.
Is there a way to do an incremental backup with --delete option that does
not use as much memory? Is

ext3 on Linux software RAID1
Everyone,
We just had a pretty bad crash on one of production boxes and the ext2
filesystem on the data partition of our box had some major filesystem
corruption. Needless to say, I am now looking into converting the
filesystem to ext3 and I have some questions regarding ext3 and Linux
software RAID.
I have read that previously there were some issues running ext3 on a

Swap size
Hi All,
This is out of the topic question, but I''m hoping that you can help me. If for
example I''m going to install a Fedora 4 64-bit with 8 to 12 Gig of physical
memory, how much swap file of directory do I need to create?
Thank you very much,
