best quad core configuration?
...run both 32-bit and 64-bit versions
of R on this machine? The most computationally-intensive thing I will be
using the machine for is large MCMC simulations, probably using multiple
instances of LinBUGS. Any advice on configuring by machine for maximum
speed for these simulations?
Thanks,

issue with image plot in 2.13.1
R gurus,
I'm having an issue with the appearance of image plots produced by R-2.13.1. When I plot an image (example code pasted below), thin white lines appear between rows and columns of pixels. The location of the lines seems somewhat random and change as the graphics device is re-sized. This occurs using a range of graphic devices (windows, png, bmp, jpeg, tiff, pdf), on two different

gaussian model of 3d surface
Hi all,
I'm working with radar remote sensing data and want to measure the height of
3d spikes created by backscatter from bright objects. My thought is to fit
a gaussian density function to each spike and extract the x, y and z
location of the peak. Can anybody give me a hint of how to do this?
Thanks,
Alan

question about availability of splines library for 2.10.0
Dear R gurus,
I am using the gbm library under R version 2.10.0, which depends on
the splines library. I have searched the various repositories and
can't seem to locate any current version of the splines library. This
is strange because I had previously installed splines (built under
2.10.0 according to the description) on another machine. Where can I
find this library?

[q]: fixme:pthread_kill_other_threads_np
I just compiled and installed wine on my glibc2.1.3 system.
Wine doesn't run anything and I get the error below.
Searching the net/FAQ/HOWTO revealed only that a very recent
glibc2.2 system is needed. Is this true?
Thanks.

Dbox Upgrade Problem With MAILBOXDIR
Hi.
Trying to upgrade from Dovecot 1.1.11 to 1.1.13 but having a problem
with imap process segfaulting. Backtrace is below. I presume it's
related to these MAILBOXDIR changes but the only documentation is the
single line in the news for changing to ":MAILBOXDIR=mailboxes" when
using dbox.
Current configuration is "mail_location = dbox:~/Mail" so what exactly

test comparing spatial point patterns?
...using a 2D generalization of the Cramer-von Mises test (to
be adapted from Syrjala, 1996), but this test is sensitive to placement of
the origin and probably requires gridding of the data. Does anybody know
of a good method to compare the spatial distribution of point pattern data?
Cheers,

I would like to analyze a 2D array using a mexican hat wavelet of fixed

one available?

parameterization of gnls model
...e); theta is
local incidence angle (independent variable); thetaref is fixed; n is the
parameter to be estimated. My question is: is this parameterization
efficient for gnls()? I've gotten reasonable results by changing the
control settings, but also lots of warning messages.
Thanks,

Drake Tax Preparation Software

moves the cursor up one line. And again, it freezes up upon trying to
exit the form.
Probably not much to go on, but if anyone has ideas for further
exploration, I would appreciate it.

Comparing spatial point patterns - Syrjala test
Dear Lists,
At several stations distributed regularly in space[1], we sampled
repeatedly (4 times) the abundance of organisms and measured
environmental parameters. I now want to compare the spatial
distribution of various species (and test wether they differ or not),
or to compare the distribution of a particular organism with the
distribution of some environmental variable.

Non-linearly constrained optimisation
Dear R Users,
I am looking for some guidance on setting up an optimisation in R with
non-linear constraints.
Here is my simple problem:
- I have a function h(inputs) whose value I would like to maximise
- the 'inputs' are subject to lower and upper bounds
- however, I have some further constraints: I would like to constrain the
values for two other separate function f(inputs) and
