inconsistency in treatment of USE.NAMES argument
Hi,
Both vapply() and sapply() support the 'USE.NAMES' argument. According
to the man page:
USE.NAMES: logical; if ?TRUE? and if ?X? is character, use ?X? as
?names? for the result unless it had names already.
But if 'X' has names already and 'USE.NAMES' is FALSE, it's not clear
what will happen to the names. Are they going to propagate to the
result

Grandstream surveillance devices
I just got a spam from telephonydepot (which I invited to spam me, so I
guess I have to call it legit marketing :) ), and they have some new
device that is meant to be a surveillance camera with audio, but the
interface is POE and SIP! A cool idea. Anyone playing with this toy yet?
I am trying to wrap my head around how asterisk might fit with the model
of this camera being "recorded" 24x7 with a continuous video/audio stream.
Does asterisk even support recordin...

R - Understanding output of the Knoxtest (Package (surveillance))
The function knox of the "Surveillance" package performs Knox test for
space-time interaction. The output is supposed to give the numbers of
events that occur in a specific distance in space and time define by the
function arguments. This function also perform a Monte Carlo permutation
test, which give the estimated value (based on...

Morans I for Spatial Surveillance
Hello,
I am interested in using Morans I for different time intervals to detect disease clusters.
Ultimately I would like to use CUSUM - or similar monitoring statistic to monitor the results of Morans I - similar to the work by
Rogerson (2005) Spatial Surveillance and Cummulative Sum Methods in Spatial and Syndromic Surveillance for Public Health.
Thus far - thanks to the list I have Morans I running in a loop for each day (however I found that on some days no data is recorded, this caused an error to get around this error I included an elseif statement to...

OT: Video Surveillance SW on CentOS
I suggested to our Homeowners Association that we begin a Private
Forum (phpBB) and web site. That suggestion has been well received and
we will proceed with that.
Now, I have become involved in a much more complex and important
project, which is Video Surveillance, for the entrance to our
subdivision.
I Googled and found two (2) things for Linux that seem to be OK:
(a) ZoneMinder
http://www.zoneminder.com/
(b) Motion
http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome
Both are licensed under the GPL. Motion is available from the RPMForge
Repository, w...

surveillance DVR
Does anyone know of a DVR that runs Linux that does NOT USE Active-X,
and/or allows logging in directly?
All I keep running into are crap that ->requires<- IE, and don't allow
directly logging in.

OT hardware question
With the continuing annoyance from motion, my manager's asked me to go
looking again for a video surveillance appliance: basically, a
motion-detecting DVR and cameras. The big thing, of course, is a) price
(this is a US federal gov't agency, and being civilian, money is *tight*,
don't give me the libertarian/GOP line about how freely we spend,
thankyouverymuch), b) it has to be on the network, and...

And, the illness changes to fever with the same pattern. I would like to
aggregate the same illnesses by date in the same fashion.
A nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks.

OT: hardware: blackmagic video capture cards
...bkmagic or sales
pages I can find, that they like "binary blobs". I also haven't been
able to find anything about o/s or library requirements.
Has anyone run across these cards, or know anything at all about them?
All we're doing with them is running a few video cameras in for
surveillance of our secure rooms, no audio, nothing fancy, with the
motion package reading the input.

run R script automatically by double-clicking WinXP desktop icon
I've written a simple script that does some surveillance analysis on daily counts of walk-in clinic visits, for our county health department. (Actually, Michael Hohle's surveillance package does all the work; I just customized it a little to work with the way our data are recorded.) The output consists of a graph and a little table.
My colleague wil...

qcc package & syndromic surveillance (multivar CUSUM?)
Dear R Community:
I am working on a public health early warning system, and
I see that the qcc package allows for CUSUM and other statistical quality tests
but I am not sure if my project is a good match for qcc functions as written.
Any advice you may have is very much appreciated.
I have four years worth of daily counts of emergency room admissions for
different conditions (e.g. respiratory,

Is Dual CPU machine solution for using Asterisk with other general apps (like home automation, web server, ...) in home environment ?
Hi,
I'm currently thinking of putting more functionalities to Linux server box.
Major is Asterisk, but would also like to add video surveillance, home
automation and limited (for only domestic up to 4 users) web, file and
mailserver apps.
I know there are problems running Asterisk with other such apps on same
machine - but wonder if I can take advantage of dual processor machine in
this situation (where one CPU would run Asterisk, and othe...

Grandstream GXW-4108 8 port FXO
...why I'm looking at
the Grandstream (even used on ebay, I don't seem to be able to find
8-16 port FXO devices for less than the approx $50 per port the
Grandstream will get me... plus it has a video input for a security
camera which is just a plus to me as installing a web capable
surveillance camera at the location is on my to do list).

Fedora change that will probably affect RHEL
...my home traffic, internal and external, goes via an ssh pipe
established through a system placed in front of the router.
But how many consumers, and keep in mind that my ISP is one of the
largest telecoms in the world, would even dream that such things
happen? Much less take steps to thwart that surveillance? Or even
know what steps are possible?
This sort of stuff should be out and out illegal. But, as the router
is the 'property' of the telecom it is up to them what they wish to
have it do and the consumer's choice it put up with that or do
without.
We are living in the golden age of...

report generator a la epiinfo
Hi
I'd like to use R in epidemiology and disease surveillance.
In EpiInfo you can have a script (.pgm) which calls a predefined report
(.rpt), where a table is calculated and values picked from that table
and placed where the author of the report wants them, with text around
those values. (Please see example below.)
I've looked at manuals, faq, mail-sea...

Optimal File Permissions for Shared Access Between Windows and Linux
Rowland,
I realized I forgot to mention a few details about specific folders with unique permissions in /mnt/shared that I need to preserve in /mnt/shared/nas:
1. /mnt/shared/video_surveillance: Originally, this folder had drwxrwx--- permissions, with reolink as the owner and surveillance as the group. However, since the surveillance group has been removed, only john_johnk and reolink need read/write access.
2. /mnt/shared/Trading/data: This directory was set up with fail2ban as the own...
