New York Times Article: Data Analysts Captivated by R's Power

R and Excel
Even using the VBA back of Excel to create interfaces with R would make a lot of sense. Suppose I could have access to VBA macros that import and export data into R , it would be great. The R GUI series like Rattle come even closer to Excel...so a VBA _R_ExCel package might be useful to ordinary folks . Besides Excel costs money, so adding R functions to Open Office would help both of them ( if

Why Excel is our friend
> > "Some people familiar with R describe it as a supercharged version of > Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet software..." > It is easy to ridicule this line from the NYT article. But this is not only a very sensible comment by a smart reporter, but also one that is good for R: It is good for R because it explains the new (R) in terms of the familiar (Excel). Of course R

Samba performance for small files
Hello, I'm testing the performance of Samba share when a windows client copy a directory that contains many small files (8-18KB). From the windows client during the transfer the speed goes up and down to 0KB/sec, so it's not stable. I have run the same test on a Windows server share (on the same hardware as the Samba share) and the transfer speed is stable, about 404KB/sec which is

Samba performance for small files
...files. The usual solution is to go with a filesystem that has strong metadata cache control. Good candidates for this are XFS and ZFS (also Lustre on the high-end for clusters). Those all offer some level of metadata cache control. Also, if you're using Linux, consider using dm-cache which supercharges your read caching. > So is there any tuning that I can add to the smb.conf to speed up the > performance when copying a directory that contains many small files > (8-18KB)? I can't help with the Samba tuning part, hopefully others have decent suggestions there. However, another t...

Best IDE for R
Dear R-Group, I am looking for suggestions for the "best" IDE for R. Best is obviously subjective but I need just the basic features that should function well (and I looked through the threads already). - Proper integration with R 2.11.1 - Good key shortcuts ... similar to the R Gui - Manageability of Projects, etc. - Neat formatting features I tried Revolution R but it seems huge in

Rsync - does it really do an *exact* copy?
Hi Rsync-ers I'm simply using rsync to do an exact copy of my root (and home) partition by using the -aHv options. When the copy is complete, I modify fstab so my root and home mount points are pointing to the newly copied partitions. When I boot (into the new partitions), init and all the services start okay; however, when I get to "mgetty" and it passes control to

zfs list improvements?
To improve the performance of scripts that manipulate zfs snapshots and the zfs snapshot service in perticular there needs to be a way to list all the snapshots for a given object and only the snapshots for that object. There are two RFEs filed that cover this: http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6352014 : ''zfs list'' should have an option to only present direct
