I need to be able to turn off host checking entirely
...e this:
[summer at numbat summer]$ ssh dugite
Last login: Thu Apr 11 05:04:54 2002 from numbat.os2.ami.com.au
[summer at dugite summer]$
I appreciate there are several crude hacks I can use. Like supplying
the host key when I install on possum, but that seems to me even worse.

New lists
Think of this as a motion as one might move at a meeting. Discussion and
refinement are in order.
I don't understand the current rationale for a single CentOS users'
list; probably in times past it was sensible, but I think the time has
come for splitting the list by release.
I'm speaking from my own perspective, but I'm sure others have similar
stories. How many users use

How should I create a repo on Centos 2.1?
I tracked down a createrepo rpm "for RHL 7.x, AS 2.1" etc (hosted by
Dag), but it's uninstallable.
Eventually I managed to create an rpm from the source (actually, that's
fairly easy when onw knows to say "python2"), but python-urlgrabber has
completely defeated me.
According to Dag, the problem is that "upstream" doesn't see the need to

Linux on a Thinkpad R40
I've just acquired a use IBM Thinkpad R40 model 2722-GDM.
I'm contemplating what to run on it, and longer-term the likely
candidates are:
Centos 5

OpenSUSE 10.2
Kubuntu - the latest.
Kubuntu - Long Life (aka 6.04, Dapper, ...)
I've booted Knoppix 4 in it and most seems well, including the Atheros

You got some 'splaininn to do Lucy ;-)
We just had a security application vendor come in. We asked about Linux
support and he said that putting a security application on top of an
insecure OS was useless. When I asked what he meant by insecure he replied
that Linux does not have a true Auditing capability - as opposed to HP-UX &
Solaris which they do support. Can anyone explain to me what he was talking
about?
Thanks,

CentOS and Atheros
What's the easiest path to having my Atheros wireless cards supported,
particularly in C5?
In the past, I've chosen to download source and build my own, but that's
become a little tiresome.
At one point, OpenSUSE was the easy option, but since 10.1 it's dropped
madwifi.

Centos 4.92
I'm looking at the first ISO image (I only have two so far), and I don't
see instructions a repo for preparing for a network install.
It used to be basically copy all the RedHat/Fedora/CentOS directories to
a common location.
Then one booted from the network, CD or whatever and gor right into it.
The last part I'm sure is substantially the same as before, but we do

Installed CentOS 5 today, question about an error I'm getting
So I did a fresh install today. Decided to go ahead and upgrade.
Everything seems okay save for three problems.
#1 - I get a message during boot saying that an Intel microcode update
didn't work. Something about not being able to find /proc/microcode.
#2 - I can't use the Firefox extension HTML Parser. Anyone use this.
#3 - Off and on GDM crashes and I get dropped into a prompt.

At this point in my lab, the only solid servers I have are Win2000.
So I xcopy the distro CDs into a directory that I make available for

Well I have had problems copying files from this distro.
I had to use the /c option in xcopy to get past the problem files..
A few examples are:

OOT: Advice on failover rsync setup
Hi all,
I have a task on setting up a cluster of 2 servers for providing ftp service.
We use RH's Cluster suite. However the cluster setup is lack of shared network
storage, so the /var/ftp/pub is mounted on each server. The cluster is set
with Master and Slave configuration (when the master is down, slave serves.
and when master is up again, slaves gives up the service back to master).

USB flash drive stopped working properly....
This past Tuesday (2/22/07) my flash drive started acting really strange
- it only worked intermittently and would disappear right after an
access or two. Yesterday it stopped working altogether - I couldn't
even access it through my WinXP-on-VMWare. I rebooted my machine, and
it worked fine after that.
Is there some time limit on how long a USB flash drive will work in
CentOS or is this a

Problems with building a complete kernel
I have a plain vanilla Centos source (not 100% sure where we got it
from), but I can't seem to get a build that installs correctly.
I tried the method described at
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel, but rpm doesn't like the
output file, and even if I install it with -F, nothing seems to happen -
no new kernel, now initrd, nothing.
When I tried following the directions in the
