Looking for a re-encoding utility
Please pardon me if you have already seen this posting, but I received
no postings from the list for a week....I assumed the list was down.
I would like to batch re-encode MP3 files on the Icecast host.
A command-line utility to take say a 56kbps MP3 file as input and
produce a 20kbps MP3 file as out would be ideal.

Re: Hi

same coherence: for example, low frequency sounds are hard to localize, so
projecting those signals onto a single channel isn't noticable.
I've forwarded your question to the vorbis-dev list, in case anyone there
has some pointers. You might also try the lame list (q.v. sulaco.org/mp3)
I know they've experimented with several encoding techniques and can
probably answer specific questions.
Hope that helps,

Argh, preecho mistriggers
In case people on the list don't know it, A Vorbis tester (who's email I've
lost! If you're on the list, speak up!) is maintaining a vorbis audio quality
test page:
http://hem.passagen.se/ingets1/vorbis.htm
He's doing us the great service of hunting down samples that break Vorbis (so
we don't have to :-)
In any case, it turns out that the trumpets in the dr4 sample

Liveice & Icecast...help
Yes, I downloaded the aumix utility and am using it now. Set line in to %50
then %25 and to record but still the same thing. I'm streaming from the
line in on the sound card which is being fed from a portable radio nearby.
I get the distortion whether I have the audio fed into 'line in' or not.

Sound & Vision codec comparison article
I just found this link on slashdot:
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/SoundAndVision/FrameSet/0,1670,_sl_SoundAndVision_sl_Article_sl_0_cm_1653_cm_130_2020_1_cm_00,00.html
It is a Sept 1999 article describing some very detailed, double blind
listening tests comparing PAC(Lucent), MP3(FhG) and MS audio at
128kbs. In typical microsoft fashon, MS audio is the clear looser
despite all their hype.
