Hot swap CPU
From: Rodrigo Barbosa <rodrigob at suespammers.org> > Btw, don't quote me on this one :) > I'm only 90% sure of the hotswapping capabilities, and less than 50% > sure about the price :) There _are_ systems with hot-swap CPUs, memory and/or, PCI[-X] slots. They are _not_ commodity and pricey, and require OS-level support. I...

Re: Reboots -- LSB 2.1 Core Generic Section 8.5
From: Rodrigo Barbosa <rodrigob at suespammers.org> > There is nothing wrong with using X11 at runlevel 3. The only thing > that can't be present is a display manager (KDM, XDM, GDM etc). That's _exactly_ what I'm talking about. Run-level 3 starts xdm. Several Linux distros use 2 for multi-user, 3 for multi-user w/X. Run-...

From: Rodrigo Barbosa <rodrigob at suespammers.org> > rcS.d is not a runlevel. It is the equivalent of rc.sysinit on other > distributions/flavors or, should I say, and expansion of that idea. Correct, that's why I said "before" the run-levels at boot. But you still need to know about it. > 0 - Halt > 1 - Single...

Choice of FTP server
I have taken over a number of RH/FC/CentOS servers recently. I am trying to upgrade all of them to CentOS 4.3 and configure them to only use software that can be managed via yum/apt repositories. One of the choices made by my predecessor was the pure-ftpd server over vsftpd. I cannot find a repo to get this rpm from and am wondering if anyone on the list has any practical experience with both and

DOCMEMORY 2.0 (simmtester) and MEMDISK
Like a lot of people, I am using SYSLINUX + MEMDISK to make a technician universal boot disk on a USB key (I have done the same with ISOLINUX and MEMDISK for a CD using Bart's method for bootable CDs) I *LOVE* Syslinux and MEMDISK, and what I can do with floppy images! I have a few problems that have cropped up, most notably the DOCMEMORY program (www.simmstester.com) boots fing, but the

EXT3-fs error (devive dm-0) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted
My recently installed CentOS 4.3 system (which is the kickstart server for other systems -- see other thread) is currently hung. I can ping it, but can't do much of anything else. When I switch to one of the virtual consoles, I can briefly see the "login:" prompt, but then that window immediately fills with up with the following message: EXT3-fs error (devive dm-0) in

Trying to find packages that depend on package X.
Quick search in bout "man yum" and "man rpm" shows how to find what package X depends upon, but not what depends upon package X. Of course, we could get a deplist for everything but I'm *guessing* that take more overhead and grep too. "yum remove" tells us. Then we just have to remember to say "No, don't remove". Am I missing something... like I

SATA RAID - LSI Megaraid SATA 150-4
I generally 3Ware controllers get recommended but the servers we are looking at getting use LSI Megaraid SATA 150-4 controllers. I was wonder what experiences there are under CentOS 4 with these positive & negative? Regards, Paul Berger

Received signal 11 during kickstart
I recently built a CentOS from the 4.3 ISOs. Now I'm ready to build another 10 systems using kickstart. I took the anaconda-ks.cfg file from the first system I built manually, modified it slightly (see below), and made it available via http. I booted the new system from the first CentOS 4.3 CD and typed the following: boot: linux ks=http://hostname/test-ks.cfg Here are the

newbie kernel question (fwd)
> ps. You still didn't answer my question about how not > compiling ext2 into the kernel brakes everything. > Don't worry, it was a rhethorical question. It's not rhetorical - it might not break it, it might break it... The point is: it's not tested by RH, it's not tested by CentOS, it probably (okay 99.99% here) works in a vanilla kernel - but does it work after

Jazz drive
Hi We setup a server the other day for a client, and it has a 35gig jazz drive in it. Centos 4.2 recognizes it as a cd disk. How would I go abouts getting it to read and write to it? When I click on the cd-rom disc icon it loads up cd/dvd creator. Shouldn't it just recognize it as an external drive? Thanks

crond not starting on reboot since U7
Hi, Just updated a few servers to U7, and rebooted them. I found out that crond would not start at boot even if it is configured to: crond 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off I have tested another reboot, same thing: I had to start crond manually. I don't see anything in the logs, and I don't have direct access to the console right now. Anyone seen the

Naming packages in custom yum repo.
I need to setup a custom yum repo to supply some packages that are not in CentOS, and some that are but have been patched and/or are different versions. Not much of a big deal. In order to limit conflict with CentOS packages, I am using a prefix other than /usr. All my packages that also have existing versions in CentOS are installed under this new prefix to prevent any conflict with the CentOS
