What to do with a inconsistency in rank() that's in S+ and R ever since?
Dear R-developers,
I just realized that rank() behaves inconsistent if combining one of na.last in {TRUE|FALSE} with a ties.method in {"average"|"random"|"max"|"min"}.
The documentation suggests that e.g. with na.last=TRUE NAs are treated like the last (=highest) value, which obviously is not the case:
> rank(c(1,2,2,NA,NA), na.last = TRUE, ties.method

FreeBSD pam auth problems
I'm impressed by dovecto and try to upgrade my home system from
wu-imapd running there for last 5 years to dovecot.
It's straghtforward FreeBSD setup with ssl-only auth,
inboxes in /var/mail and user mail under %h/Mail
But I get some strange error:
Fatal: userdb didn't return a home directory, but mail location used
it (%h): %h/Mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u
Thank you in advance!

Rsync friendly zlib/gzip compression - revisited
...vg. And smaller Xavg *should* translate into better rsync performance. I have NOT tested this yet, but it is certainly an obvious next step.
There is one more consideration: If a small change is made to a file, what are the chances of that change messing up 2 checksum blocks instead of 1? In straghtforward rsync, messing up one or two blocks is not that big of a deal. Once the data is compressed, I'm thinking that it would tend to be amplified. I haven't done any statistics on this, and I could be compeltely off base - but my initial intuition is that having a smaller window size would lead...
