Analysing Character Strings for subsequent frequency analysis
...urthermore, how do you substr a text string and reference each letter? I can use nchar to see how many letters per string but not to select each letter. I would prefer to remain in R and not deviate to Python etc as getting R onto the school mainframe has been a long journey... Many thanks Bob Stoner Sleaford, Lincolnshire, UK

Problems with Word 200 and Samba 2.2.6 - RESOLVED
...pack and not. The problem did not seem to occur, ever, using other Office 2000 software such as Excel and Powerpoint. The server was running Samba 2.2.5 and Redhat 7.2. I know that's not much of a diagnosis, but it worked. Hope this helps someone, Brad -----Original Message----- From: Ed Stoner [mailto:ed@whsd.k12.pa.us] Sent: Thursday, November 21, 2002 9:07 AM To: Marian Mlcoch, Ing Cc: samba@samba.org Subject: Re: [Samba] Problems with Word 200 and Samba 2.2.6 Thanks. Intel libraries
Warning: newbie post I've scanned the archives and found some discussion of porting some code so it's integer based as opposed to floating point based. Has anyone looked at using Intel's Integrated Performance Primitives or their Math Kernel Library in an effort to optimize the code across all x86/XScale processors? Any long-time CentOS users on list using Ubuntu as well?
I've gotten roped into helping a local charity with some computing/infrastructure snafus. It seems their last good Samaritan installed Ubuntu all over the place and is "unavailable" now to clean up the mess. CentOS has made me somewhat lazy because everything just works out of the box for the most part and you've got the occasional "yum update". :) These are

CentOS 4.4 and other software?
I just installed CentOS 4.4 on my laptop, having good experience with Debian, Fedora Core 5, and RHEL4. I really like 4.4's overall appearance (meshing of RHEL4 and FC5), but what I have yet to figure out is how to access repositories for applications that are not part of the default install, such as ncftp. I invoked and updated yum, but it had no idea. I would also like to see what

Official GUI Speex player
One thing that is keeping Speex from being adopted is a lack of GUI players. I think that Speex could benefit from an offial cross-platform GUI player. The goal of the player should be to be stable, to the point(no fluff like visualisations, playlists, an equaliser, etc.), self contained(no external .DLLs, etc), and to be small(500k or less) so that people with modems don't have to wait

Problems with Word 200 and Samba 2.2.6
I'm hoping someone has some insight into a problem I'm currenty having, which is: No one is able to edit (in place) documents with Word 2000 on a samba (2.2.6) disk share. A user can open word and save a document to the share, but when they go to edit the document Word says "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error". From Microsoft KB Q211632 it appears

SunOS-5.8 / Samba-2.2.0 W2K3 Domain Shares
Hello, We have a scientific instrument being controlled by a SparcStation (under SunOS-5.8) and running Samba-2.2.0 that has joined the campus wide W2K3 domain. I am currently in the process of trying to setup the smb.conf file so that users of a W2K3 security group can access a single share on the instrument. If this is pedestrian to ask, please forgive me.
