just an idea about quality evaluation
...d this "rest" be an indicator for the quality of the encoder ? I know that evaluating the quality of a perceptual encoder with any technical equipment is nearly impossible and it would be better to let the ear do this. But I'd like to know what you think about this idea . encoder block diagram
I've made a block diagram of the encoder because I tried to find out, how it works http://stoffke.freeshell.65535.net/ogg/block.html Although there are specifiation docs, that give very detailed information about single aspects of the encoding (or decoding) , I'm missing documenations that give a more general overview, about how the encoder works. (Vorbis Illuminated seems a bit outdated,...

square polar mapping - backgrounds
...a bit tricky - to me - and not so easy to understand. Searching the web did't get me any results, so I wonder what the background of square polar mapping is. Is it derived from some mathematical publications or just the result of a brilliant intuition of a Vorbis programmer ? ;) Thanks. Vorbis Codebooks
...Vorbis uses codebooks, for example to do vectorquantization and huffman-encoding. My question is - are all these codebook dynamicly generated ("trained") or are there also static codebooks used ? If yes, what specific tasks are these 2 types used for, during encoding ? floor curve question (whitening filter)
...?</P> I know, that a whitening filter removes the non-whitecomponents from a noise signal. But how can this be adopted<BR>to MDCT data ?</P> Is it like subtracting only the amplitude values, or some kind offrequency filtering as well ?</P> </P> Thanks,</P> Stoffke</P></FONT></BODY> --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-dev-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. Questions about window sizes
...st ? 2. How does the encoder decide , whether to use short or long blocks during encoding ? In earlier versions, it was done "by 4 parallel bandpass filters that detect energy surges", but Monty said it will be changed. Spectral phase information in residue vectors
I found this sentence in the Ogg format specs: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/doc/vorbis-spec-res.html "A residue vector may represent spectral lines, spectral magnitude, spectral phase or hybrids as mixed by channel coupling." But where does the spectral phase information come from ? AFAIK MDCT doesn't provide any phase information. And in OGG-encoding, MDCT is taking place a few

psycho-acoustic model in ogg vorbis
I wonder what psycho-acoustic model is used in ogg vorbis. Did they create their own model (this requires big listening tests) ? Or is it something that was already there, like gpsycho ? <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-dev-request@xiph.org'

Vorbis encoder?
I have been looking at Vorbis support material for the past few days and have found no helpful reference to encoding Vorbis files. I found a diagram ( http://stoffke.port5.com/en_block/block_en.html ) and a document titled "Vorbis illuminated" but they disagree on the flow of the encoder. Is the diagram accurate or should I believe the (difficult to read) vorbis illuminated? My apologies if there is information right under my nose on the Vorbis...
