steadily increasing/high loadavg without i/o wait or cpu utilization
Hi all,
I just installed centos 5.4 xen-kernel on intel core i5 machine as dom0.
After some hours of syncing a raid10 array (8 sata disk) I noticed a
steadily increasing loadavg. I think without reasonable i/o wait or cpu
utilization the loadavg on this system should be very lower. If this
loadavg is normal I would be greatful if somone could explain why. The
screenshots below show that there is neither much i/o wait nor much cpu
utilization.

BTRFS and the steadily lit LED
Hi guys,
After having received strong advice from the people in this list to
upgrade my kernel to the latest one, I have installed 3.8.0-14-generic
#24-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 on several (4) machines.
In the hope of improving systems speed I had also removed all snapshots
then defragged the FSes - the snapshots have been recreated since, as I
use the excellent SuSE "Snapper" tool.
But well,

Purging /var/mail/username ?
Dovecot is delivering mail to my ~/.mail directory wonderfully. But
/var/mail/michael is growing steadily.
Is it the job of Dovecot to purge this file regularly? Is there a setting
somewhere for this?
Thanks,
Michael

smbd's using up 100% of all cpu's and load avg slowly going up
Hi,
Running samba sernet 4.1.6-7, I've noticed the load avg slowly / steadily
creeping up (.e.g > 100). I'm now noticing that several smbd processes are
at 100%. I don't actually notice that much bandwidth usage on the system
(e.g. iptraf/iftop). Any idea what's causing this?
Restarting smbd helps for a few days, but then the high load avg returns.
Thanks,

Puppet + HAProxy
Hello,
The Puppet footprint within my company is steadily growing, We took
the basic steps to make it more robust (passenger + apache) but in
order to meet the needs of a 24x7 shop I need redundancy. I''ve read
the Reductive Labs WIKI about redundancy (http://reductivelabs.com/

Or they could simply have gone with KDE 4, a stable and mature desktop

potty-trained from scratch again while steadily losing features every
other minor upgrade.

101th domU fails to start with "SETVCPUCONTEXT failed"
Hello there,
We (a small hosting community) are running a steadily growing number of Xen

domUs at the moment. Trying to create a new one results in this error:

Strategy for penalising IPs with too many simultaneous sessions
Hi all,
I have been trying to investigate traffic shaping in an effort to solve
the "unfriendly network apps" problem on a test network.
I have a basis by which I''d like to shape traffic, but studying the
howto doesn''t uncover and existing qdisc that seems to fit what I would
like to do.
The problem I would like to address is to prevent an IP address opening

This is with the default kernel configs xen-unstable provides. NX is

Opteron. Even through they are "stuck", cpu time for these domains
increments steadily. Any ideas?

SMBD CPU climbs sky high when writing DPX files
...when
I was writing to a 6 TB ext4 filesystem. This was a real shocker.
http://sites.google.com/site/andrewl733info/ext4_and_samba_2
On the above system (which had 6 GB of RAM), it seems that most cpu
activity was restricted to a single core of a Quad Core CPU. SMBD cpu
utilization climbed steadily throughout the capture. CPU began at 7
percent for one core and by the time I got to 66000 frames, I was at 100
percent cpu for one core. I started taking screen shots a third of the
way through. Then I went back and started again.
I also tested XFS as the filesystem. In fact, that's my p...

Selling Wine compatibility to Windows software vendors.
...ery nicely and is the ONLY reason we were able to fully convert all of our computers to linux.
We even sell gaming PCs with World of Warcraft thanks to Wine.
We were just wondering if the developers of Wine ever considered selling compatibility to software vendors. Since the linux user market is steadily growing reaching this market would be huge and would not require much effort. Software can be simply developed for Windows based systems with Wine compatibility in mind.
What Wine developers can sell these companies is for example a list of usable functions that software packages have access to an...

Memory leak
Has anyone noticed (using the linux command 'top') a gradual increase in
memory usage when asterisk is under heavy processing? I am currently
pumping 4 ISDN spans (T-1) through my asterisk test system, and have seen
the memory used value in top climb steadily each second. Concurrently, the
value for "cached" in top also climbs, but occasionally it drops, as well.
Eventually, I start eating into swap and asterisk typically starts dropping
calls. A reboot is required to recover the memory, unless someone here
knows of a less drastic method...

finding a memory leak - committed memory SPIKES!
Hey folks,
I've got a RHEL 4.3 system (one of the few I have not yet converted to
CentOS) that is running DB2 ... looks like 8.1
Just noticed that committed memory on my Munin graphs has been
steadily climbing on a constant curve - yikes!
There are 16G of physical ram and the commit is up to 80G now.
Fortunately this is evidently not being accessed because I am not
doing any swapping.
I've been googling for over an hour now - found lots of interesting
stuff to read up on, but not exactly w...

broken controls in "Captain Claw" game
...spacebar, he makes a high jump. However, under wine all jumps are low. Other movements work fine though.
I even tried to run the game under winxp guest in VirtualBox, but had the same problem. reassigning keys doesn't help.
I just don't get it: when holding the movement keys, the char moves steadily. That means, the game knows, that I hold the key. Why it doesn't see that when I hold the "jump" key?
Multimedia timers maybe?

Network failure?
Hi to the list.
SuSE 9.1, Samba 3.04, + cups, dns, dhcp, apache2, squid, SuSEfirewall2.
2 x 2.0 GHz cpu + 2GB mem. Essentially LAN only.
Problem:
Server stops responding to logons, logged on users kicked out of home-drives.
This happens twice a normal working day. Memory seems to dribble away steadily
but surely...
My link via ssh (PUtty) stays good.
Question:
This has been frustrating me for some time, and I can't seem to pin down the
cause (my knowledge is in puberty).
I have come to the point of re-instalation, (copout?), but maybe someone came
across this before and is willing to point...

reposurgon and the conversion
My wife just got laid off - the recession has hit her law firm hard.
This means my priorities have shifted to either finding more paying
work myself or helping her find another job.
This means the timeframe for a finished repo conversion just got more
uncertain, as I may not be able to work steadily on it for a while.

problems with samba and Perc/2 RAID
....1 out of the box. In
addition, it has a PERC2/SC Single Channel RAID card for six 18GB LVD
SCSI drives.
The problem is that, while we're not doing anything fancy with
samba, basic file share stuff, the load seems to spike whenever writes
are done. When doing a large file copy, the load will steadily rise to
about 7 or 8, and then the share stops responding, killing any file
copy taking place.
It's not the RAID that's causing the problem per se; when I do
a large file copy on the server, the copy works just fine without a
load spike taking place.
Has anyone else had this problem befo...

File descriptor leak (?) in Python
Hi all,
Recently I have upgraded a Python application from Xapian 1.0.7 to
1.2.2 in order to use the PostingSource class. It is a long-running
process, and I am seeing the number of open file descriptors to the
Xapian database steadily increase. I suspect what I am seeing is some
kind of resource leak.
I have no idea if it is a problem in our code or in the Xapian Python
bindings. How do I debug this problem?
Regards,
Joost

I have a number simple R functions written for the biologists I work

update their installation.
The functions are pure R, with no compiled code, but alias, I cannot figure out
how to build this package so that it is portable across operating
