view remote desktop
I know with vnc you can access virtual desktops, but is there a way to view the current desktop on a kde session? I tried changing the .vnc/xstartup and added the startkde & at the end to get the gui working, but can only get virtual desktops to show. or if there is a different software to use that someone else might know about. linux problems
...ou can help me with these. 1. I have to generate keyboard /mouse interrupt from my program which xlock can recognize so that prompt will appear on it. The interrupt will be generated from a program running at the background. It is required in my project. 2. I have started a program in /usr/bin/startkde, which was necessary at that time only, has the ownership of the user who logged in. I want that the ownership should remain the same, but the owner should not be able to remove the file by killing it, not even with "kill -9 pid". But when the user logs out the program should get re...

Installing FreeBSD-Stable and Upgrading to FreeBSD-Stable
I am a newbie trying to get the most current Stable version of FreeBSD running. I have been using CVS to update my system, but things don't work after an update. For example KDE 3.1 (from KDE 3.0) doesn't start using startkde. I am looking for instructions on the best way to Install the lastest version of FreeBSD-Stable and how to Upgrade the system in the future. Thanks.

a-gnome-oyences
Most of my users are on kde, as am I (I really don't like gnome). I've got one on gnome, though, CentOS 6.4, and I have a problem: I have to start an agent running ->on login<-, so that the same one is in the environment of every term window he opens. In kde, no problem, I modify /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc-common so that code in there calls our (newer) ssh-agent instead of the stock one.

help install
...Or any graphic mode, that I know of. I have enabled a root password, and a user password. I am trying to install on a SSD of 250 GB. The installation appears to work, but it boots to black screen with white letters. It appears to accept some BASH commands, but it does not respond to startx or startkde. It appears to respond to su, but that doesn't help. (Or sudo, either, but I'm used to su.) I have tried to clear the SSD completely so there are no partitions on it, not even the Windows 1GB boot partition. (I had that, but Centos didn't work so I eliminated it.) * I downloaded...

Workaround found, .Xauthority and SMB, Mounting home directory
...ious posts, and did a little tweaking on my own, which include the following: a) I've added the following to the user's .bash_profile: export XAUTHORITY=/tmp/.Xauthority export ICEAUTHORITY=/tmp/.ICEauthority b) NOTE: gnome doesn't require this step. I did some editing of my /usr/bin/startkde script to move all .kde and .kderc etc... files OUT of the home directory. From what I can tell, limits in the SMBFS are not allowing kde to start successfully. (sockets??) This is a heavy workaround, but works nicely in our environment. If you would like details on this fix let me know. **De...

reference counting in ssh-agent?
Hi, In a machine that I regularly use one console and remotely I have the line: eval `ssh-agent` In my .login, as per the ssh-agent(1) man page. Problem: when I log out, the ssh-agent process persists which is the correct behavior in some cases, but not in others. This means that periodically I have to kill off hundreds of ssh-agent processes as they are taking up a substantial amount of my

CentOS 6: Making KDE Default
I learned from Anne that if I boot to level 5, after I enter the username, can select Gnome or KDE. I note that the default is always Gnome. How can I make the default KDE? How can I get KDE with startx after booting to level 3? Thanks, Mike.

vncserver does not start gnome-sessioin automatically
I installed RHEL 5.8 x86_64 today. To my surprise, when I connect it using vnc viewer it does not start gnome-session automatically. The last line in .vnc/xstartup is twm& Before I removed RHEL 6.1 a few days ago, vncserver always starts gnome-session every time I open vncviewer. Is that related to RHEL version or vnc-server version? Best Regards, Yawei

Using Compiz in KDE
I have had a rather hard time enabling Compiz on my Dell laptop, as it has an ATI X1400 video card. I found a tutorial which helped me configure Compiz in Gnome, but I'm not about to switch to Gnome. I hope that someone here can help me translate the scripts used in the tutorial to start KDE instead of Gnome. I myself have been unable to do so, after a good day googling the subject. These are

No shutdown option in KDE with Compiz-Fusion
I have installed Compiz-Fusion on several Ubuntu machines, all different hardware, with KDE. In all of them, the option to shutdown or reset the computer is absent from the KDE logout buttons when running Compiz-Fusion. I have searched google and see that others have this problem, but I do not see a solution. Is there a known solution to this condition? Thanks in advance. Dotan Cohen

WinNY and Wine
Hello everyone, I'm trying to figure out how to run Winny2b71 with wine-20050111-r1 on 2005.0 Gentoo Linux with kernel 2.6.11 r11 (I thought the version info might be helpful). The result is nothing-- no error message, nothing loads, nothing flashes. I have the program installed in /root/.wine/Apps/Winny2, and I use the appropriate ' wine "[path]" ' command to execute the

Setting up a GUI remote access
Currently I have VNC running on my Windows desktop with Samba providing access to my Linux server. Since Linux is more reliable than Windows, I would like to be able to access my Linux (Centos 5.5) via my Windows notebook - hopefully via VNC or some similar application and then access the Windows desktop (if it is not locked up :-) ) with Samba. What is the best VNC like application to

Need help with SWAT
No matter what I try, I cannot get SWAT to work. No, I'm new to solaris, so maybe I'm not doing something that should be done prior to trying to use SWAT. Samba does seem to be working, somewhat. I can connect to a share using the smbclient on the same solaris system that I installed samba on....but I cannot connect to the share on the solaris system with my Windows XP system. Since it is
