Multiple threads writing to the same Starling queue doesn't work?
Hi guys, I can''t find a clear answer to this: is it possible/correct to have several threads write to the same Starling queue at the "same time"? It doesn''t seem reliable according to my tests - but maybe I am doing something wrong. If I do: def test_starling FooWorker.asynch_foo_test(:my_id => ''foo'') temp = [] for i in 1..1000 temp << Thread.new(i) {|rando...

Write pure sine to *.ogg directly?
Hello, I am author of a Morse code training software written in Perl at http://starling.ws/morse Currently I output to *.wav and, if on Unix, convert to *.ogg. And that's okay for a trainer. But I have desire to upgrade the project to a real-time communication tool...or at least a Morse code audio mail routine. And I should like to avoid *.wav. I'd like some means of wri...

Paperclip not executing FFMPEG properly
Im using a customs processor to run ffmpeg on a video to create a thumbnail. So far so good. "upstream testing"??
...gmane.linux.centos.general] My wife had been running CentOS 6.4 almost since its inception; then her PC broke down. We got a PC from System76, and Ubuntu turned out utterly unsuitable for us, as expected -- as bad for us as Gnome3. (I had previously bought a System76 net book (starling iirc), and immediately installed the then current Fedora; all has been well with that. This time, alas!, I thought I should let her try Ubuntu; so I tried running it myself for an houror two to get it set up and tweaked. I couldn't even find any of the apps I wanted to...

Fast quality reduction transcoding
...e to YUV and re-encode at similar bitrate? * Will it indeed be much faster than a complete re-encode? * How hard a task would it be to develop? The application would be to have users upload high quality Theora videos to our website, and then to offer a selection of bitrates for download. -- Tim Starling (Wikimedia Foundation)

FOSS, Science, and Public activism
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 (Sorry if you get more than one copy of this message, but I felt that it was urgent to get this important info out.) The values of freedom and openness are crucial to understanding itself, so that civilization and public welfare now depend on them, as I argue below. These values may find their best expression in the free and open source software

Re-using crontrollers with non-http requests
Hi! I am creating a application that does a lot of background processing. For this I am using a queue (starling in my case...) and several pollers that will get a message from the queue and execute some code corresponding do it. The code that these pollers process looks a lot like some code in methods included in some of my rails application controllers. I wanted to DRY this a little bit, so I tried to use...

Ready for real use?
Hi all, I've been following Theora's progress for a while as the company I work for is looking at replacing the use of the MPEG1 codec with a royalty free alternative. I have evaluated Theora and I think in its current state it is quite close to doing to job as oppose to Dirac which still has a very long way to go. What I would like to ask is how far from 1.0 is Theora? I see periodic

Attachment_fu, Paperclip, & S3
For various reasons, I made a git branch and installed Paperclip in place of attachment_fu. Paperclip works great except that images seem to have lost some quality; edges have gone a little too jaggy to be able to drop attachment_fu just yet. After a post on the Paperclip Google Group, someone suggested the :convert_options could be passed additional attributes, like ''quality'',
