hiding table IDs from users
I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on the most efficient way of making sure users never see internal table IDs? Clearly, scaffold views show a lot of IDs by default and those can be hidden. The problem seems to be all of the IDs that Rails passes around in URLs (such as http://mysite.com/user/show/12345). My primary concerns are security and confidentiality--one can imagine that there

Security communication dilemma: your help needed
...mization, let me know and we'll see if it will do the right thing, otherwise we'll continue with the functional but somewhat awkward current method. Current procedure: An individual will reply back, and create a 1:1 signed exchange with the original correspondent. Then, the Digium staffer will relay the data (with relevant GPG keys) to each other Digium staff member who may be involved. Desired procedure: A public key signature method would be publicly available via an SSL web page or various keyservers. Individuals could sign messages with the public key. Signed messages...

HELP: Connections dropping whilst processes increasing.
I'm running Samba 2.0.4b on a E450 running Solaris 7 which acts as a diskspace server for students, normally everything runs quite smoothly with numbers of connections in the region of about 800/900. Then every now and again students will start seeing their connections being lost and others will not get a connection when they log in, looking at the system shows no obvious problems, except

Is lsb 3.2+ detrimental to CentOS 5.4?
I found out today that Google Chrome is now available for Linux. ...imately come from. It's not enough for us to think that the work we do is right - a significant portion of the public must also agree and be willing to vote with their money. Without that support we simply cannot continue. The 10% that our Member Projects contribute doesn't cover even one staffer plus basic overhead. So please help with our campaign - there are a few ideas for how you can help at the bottom of this email. We have structured the campaign with two make-or-break levels: a lower level that will just sustain the organization for a 'bare minimum' service plan to our memb...

Ashlee Vance's article on R in the New York Times
Ashlee Vance's article on R in the New York Times. This is typical of the New York Times. Because they get to coast on the prestige and reputation of their brand , they have a history of just this sort of journalistic sloppiness. Whether it's the author or the editor at fault doesn't really matter, they do this screw-up all the time. Look, if you write an article on the first page of

...a directory and have them show up for each child object. Because the filesystem semantics are not the same in *nix-land, you need to go into the directly and manually propigate the permissions, or if you're stuck trying to administer permissions through a windows session (like the other IT staffers in my department), using the Advanced setting to force-reset all permissions on all child objects. This has also caused a bit of grousing as we have several nested directories with a heiarchy of permissions; getting one parent directory wrong means rebuilding permissions for several child dir...

Size of R user base
I have been trying to determine the size of the R user base, and was asked to share my findings with this mailing list. Although I still don't have any definite estimate of this number, I do have some interesting and indicative information: 1. It appears that there are about 100,000 S-PLUS users. Rationale: According to Insightful's 2002 Annual Report, over 100,000 people use
