Google to Open-source VP8 for HTML5 Video
...fox browser ? and Google Chrome are expected to also announce support for HTML5 video playback using the new open codec. Google has controlled the VP8 codec ever since it finalized the acquisition of video codec maker On2 Technologies in February. When reached for comment as to its plans, a Google spokesperson told us the company had ?nothing to announce at this time.? The move comes as online video publishers are gravitating toward standards-based HTML5 video delivery, bolstered in part by the release of the iPad. However, that acceptance has been slowed by the fact that the industry has yet to agree o...

Re: FLAC: same features as WavPack
Hi Justin, Are you saying that 24-bit support does not work for you? Which version of FLAC are you using? What platform? What kind of files are you trying to compress? I am not any kind of official spokesperson for FLAC, but this alleged report about 24-bit problems surfaced in Aug 2006. However, I have been successfully using 24-bit FLAC since June of 2004, and I have never seen a single problem. The largest FLAC-compressed files are 69% of the original 24-bit file, and I have never seen one en...

...What if YOU could be the one to help businesses boost engagement and conversions from their website... charge them for it and keep all of the profits? Imagine being able to take a REAL human spokesperson and overlay it on most ANY website as an instant "Greeter," coercing website visitors to take action! Imagine being able to simply type what this REAL human will say? in ANY language? ... and perhaps best of all... ... Imagine even being able t...

[LLVMdev] [PATCH] x86/asm: avoid mnemonics without type suffix
...ambiguous and not questioned. The discussion we're having involves only the immediate form of the instruction. GNU as interprets: bt $63, mem as btl $63, mem which may or may not be what the user intended, but is not the same as "btq $63, mem". I'm not an official LLVM spokesperson or anything, but our consensus seems to be that "bt $imm, whatever" is ambiguous (the %eax and %rax versions you quoted disambiguate the width) and should be disallowed by the assembler. The patch we're replying to implements that as a NOP fix to the kernel (GNU as always treats &quo...

recommended computing server for R (March 2009)?
dear r-experts: I need to speed up my monte-carlo simulations. my code is written in R (and it was also the cause of my many questions here over the last few days). my code is almost all matrix/vector algebra on panel data sets---long-difference, fixed-effects, blundell-bond, etc.. the data set is about 10MB, so 1GB per CPU core should be plenty for my operations, and with $10/GB of

1024-bit RSA keys in danger of compromise
...o build such a device, would ever want to build such a device, could never obtain a sufficient number of chips for such a device, or simply should use that vendor's "unbreakable virtual onetime pad" technology instead. While the latter doesn't warrant comment, one question to ask spokespersons pitching the former is "what key size is the majority of your customers using with your security product"? Having worked in this industry for over a decade, I can state without qualification that anybody other than perhaps some of the HSM vendors would be misinformed if they claimed that...

[LLVMdev] [PATCH] x86/asm: avoid mnemonics without type suffix
1c54d77 (x86: partial unification of asm-x86/bitops.h, 2008-01-30) changed a bunch of btrl/btsl instructions to btr/bts, with the following justification: The inline assembly for the bit operations has been changed to remove explicit sizing hints on the instructions, so the assembler will pick the appropriate instruction forms depending on the architecture and the context. Unfortunately,
