Standard location for hotplug-time hdparm invocation
I need to disable the spin-down on an external USB drive because it spins down spontaneously while in use. The drive forgets the spindown-disable state across power outage so I need to reissue the hdparm command with each boot or hotplug. Where should I put the hdparm command to do this?

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
...etely aggravating complaint that the partition's not aligned, but gives you no idea *why*, or how to align it - I pulled the drive into parted, and told it to print, and it did *not* complain the partition wasn't aligned. Next trick: hdparm. I want to disable, or at least shove way up, the spindown timeout on these drives, which, depending on the thread you read, is 6 or 8 seconds. hdparm should let me do that... but before I do, I'd like to know what it's set at. Does anyone know how to find that out? And no, the manpage is wrong, hdparm -B <no parm) /dev/sdx does *not* read it, i...

drive to standby after idle timeout?
I'd like to to put the hard drives in standby mode during periods of no activity. I'm just running a file server plus a couple small things on a Qube 3 from home, although the web stuff will increase it's still minimal. On my NetBSD systems I can use atactl to do this via: mount -u -o async, noatime, nodevmtime / mount -u -o async, noatime /usr atactl wd0 setidle 5 [wait a time]

"Enterprise Class Hard Drive" - Scam Warning
Hi All, I know many of us here manage RAID on our Centos based servers so this may be of interest to us all. I ordered three new "Enterprise hard drives" this month from a well known UK online retailer. The drives arrived as new in their anti-static packaging. Before using one of the drives in a mission critical hardware raid I checked the SMART attributes and was amazed at what I

Need help with Tripp Lite SMART1300LCDT NUT v2.7.3
So when the UPS is communicating with the driver... it seems to work.? Problem is now that it keeps disconnecting.? Any recommendation on how to keep the drivers from disconnecting using the usb_set_altinterface?? (PS.? Is there a specific value to use?)? Or this confirms there is an issue with the usbhid-ups driver with the FreeBSD 10.2 kernel? upsc upstl1300 battery.charge: 100

floppy drives
Yes, really. I've got hundreds of the damn things here at home, and I want to go through them and get rid of them all. But... to do that I want to read them. I have both a 5.25" and a 3.5" drive, both are plugged in, but in the BIOS, all I see is the 3.5". Fine, I figure I'll take care of those. Nope. I see /dev/fd0 once I've booted up, but neither konqueror nor

PATCH: Forcible delaying of UFS (soft)updates
Here's a patch against 4.8-RELEASE kernel that allows disk writes on softupdates-enabled filesystems to be delayed for (theoretically) arbitrarily long periods of time. The motivation for such updating policy is surprisingly not purely suicidal - it can allow disks on laptops to spin down immediately after I/O operations and stay idle for longer periods of time, thus saving considerable amount

40TB File System Recommendations
Hello All I have a brand spanking new 40TB Hardware Raid6 array to play around with. I am looking for recommendations for which filesystem to use. I am trying not to break this up into multiple file systems as we are going to use it for backups. Other factors is performance and reliability. CentOS 5.6 array is /dev/sdb So here is what I have tried so far reiserfs is limited to 16TB ext4

Best 1.5TB drives for consumer RAID?
Which consumer-priced 1.5TB drives do people currently recommend? I had zero read/write/checksum errors so far in 2 years with my trusty old Western Digital WD7500AAKS drives, but now I want to upgrade to a new set of drives that are big, reliable and cheap. As of Jan 2010 it seems the price sweet spot is the 1.5TB drives. As I had a lot of success with Western Digital drives I thought I would

Yager on ZFS
Not sure if it''s been posted yet, my email is currently down... http://weblog.infoworld.com/yager/archives/2007/10/suns_zfs_is_clo.html Interesting piece. This is the second post from Yager that shows solaris in a pretty good light. I particularly like his closing comment: "If you haven''t checked out ZFS yet, do, because it will eventually become ubiquitously implemented
