Sorting results by a "sort expression"
...;s all -- have you heard from Rusty
about it since? If so, how difficult would it be to integrate this with
Xapian? (Unfortunately I am by no means a C++ expert -- it's been difficult
enough just to stumble through the source code.)
Thanks for any insight you can give...

A new, minimal Sphinx gem for Rails
...r
with Sphinx under Rails 3, we think this gem is a pretty great fit. The
approach is to use ERB templating to configure Sphinx instead of a DSL.
You need to learn the Sphinx configuration syntax, but you get a really
flexible solution in exchange.
We also support SphinxQL in this gem:
http://sphinxsearch.com/docs/manual-0.9.9.html#sphinxql
It''s very minimal support, just a wrapper around Mysql2. I looked at
creating an ARel wrapper, but SphinxQL itself ended up being a bit buggy
about quotes and escaping values so we moved away from SphinxQL for now.
The gem is published at rubygems an...

...fields properly!
I'm sure it could be improved, for example doing something with
categories; exporting Talk:, User: etc namespaces; removing/converting
wiki markup in some way. But what it does now works just great for me. I
wasn't looking to replace the (awful) MediaWiki search (I use
SphinxSearch for that, which is vastly better than the built in search).
I just wanted a single search point for finding those nuggets I knew I
have hidden away somewhere.
As an aside, why are the scriptindex field definitions defined in a
separate file? Couldn't they go in-line before the data (sort of...

ferret success stories?
Hi all,
there was a recent thread[1] on rails-deploy about Ferret in which a lot
of people complained of problems using it in production.
I''ve been using Ferret (with DRb) for many months now with no serious
issues. I''m assuming the posters know what they''re doing so I''m
guessing they''re just using Ferret in higher-scale environments than me.

Multithreading / multiprocessing woes
I''ve been running some multithreaded tests on Ferret. Using a single
Ferret::Index::Index inside a DRb server, it definitely behaves for me
as if all readers are locked out of the index when writing is going on
in that index, not just optimization -- at least when segment merging
happens, which is when the writes take the longest and you can
therefore least afford to lock out all reads.
