rsync stalls at .sparsebundle directories on OS X‏‏
Hi. I try to make backups from one disk to another. I have .sparsebundle[1] directories on the source drive (/Volumes/data/). When rsync reaches the first .sparsebundle it stalls and stays there until i ctrl+c. I'm using OS X Yosemite and rsync version 3.1.1 protocol version 31 installed via homebrew. However, I had this problem on OS X Lion too using rsync 3.0.9....

In case anyone else as clueless as I am runs into this: this isn't really a Samba issue. Samba's fruit_get_num_bands() failed, but the "pur...

Why is my rsync transfer slow?
Just chiming in here, I haven’t read all the previous posts so may be repeating… Mike Bombich has a good piece on benchmarks for various source/destination scenarios with rsync. https://bombich.com/kb/ccc3/how-long-should-clone-or-backup-take Note that copying to sparsebundle on local media is as fast as to local disk. Sparsebundle is a mac filesystem whereas NAS is not so certain file metadata are not covered like Hard links,Acls and groups and owners. So it is important to turn off those rsync options to scan those file parts on NAS. But sparsebundle on NAS is ok for...

vfs fruit disk_free fails on tmsize overflow with macOS Time Machine
...successfully connect to the share, and ran the Time Machine backup from MacOS Mojave version 10.14.6 (18G2022). At the beginning the Time Machine client correctly reports the space available, according to the max size in the config. The first backup completes successfully, creating its Client Name.sparsebundle folder and contents. However on subsequent occasions the client fails to connect to the share. On the client the Finder returns the error `The operation can?t be completed because the original item for ?TimeMachineBackup? can?t be found` and using the command line gives `mount_smbfs: mount error:...

Writing on an HFS+ drive on raspberry pi
...e raspberry pi with writing permissions, I still cannot manage to write to the drive. At first I thought it was a problem of the interface between samba and time machine, but after trying out CCC as an alternative, I noticed that even CCC couldn't make backups because it couldn't create the sparsebundle image. Also, if I access the samba drive from finder I cannot create folders nor delete/rename them. So, I realised that the problem must lie within permissions. So far the steps that I have taken to get towards the right direction are: 1) I have installed hfsplus, hfsutils, hfsprogs to give HFS...

Arstechnica reviews Samba-based iXsystems TrueNAS Core
.../ group quota support through vfs_ixnas (get/set nt quotas). 4) a time machine vfs module (vfs_tmprotect) that snapshots time machine shares in the vfs disconnect function (and does some basic snapshot maintenance). The goal is to give users a number of snapshots at clean states in the history of a sparsebundle volume so that they can roll back to a previous version of the time machine backup in case it gets corrupted. I'm almost done with writing cross-platform (linux / freebsd) wrapper around libzfs so that community members who want to use some of the nice features of libzfs for writing their own...
