smbfs + wine + sourcesafe = slow
While it is amazing that Sourcesafe runs under Wine, its performance leaves a lot to be desired. I am using Sourcesafe with Wine (my setup is documented at http://www.kegel.com/linux/vss-howto.html ). The Wine I'm using is from CVS as of last week. My workstation is a dual Pentium Xeon 1400MHz from Dell running 2.4.10. (That...

Visual Sourcesafe HOWTO
I went to the trouble of setting up Visual Sourcesafe on a Linux system recently. There was a fair amount of futzing required, so I've documented what I had to do at http://www.kegel.com/linux/vss-howto.html Comments and corrections welcome. I'd also love to know how to get this working without hardcoding NT usernames and passwords! The...

Quick UNC support hack?
I ran into a situation where partial UNC support would be helpful and easy. Visual Sourcesafe runs well under Wine if I map \\vssServer\vssDir to a drive letter. Unfortunately, our administrator has the line journal_file = \\vssServer\vssDir\foo.txt in the sourcesafe config file. This causes an error dialog box "Bad DOS filename \\vssServer\vssDir\foo.txt". If Wine handled UN...

max. no of files(again)
Hello! A good day to you all. we've recently had some problems with samba (2.2.0) and sourcesafe. We had one particular project with over 700 files on it, and we've just recently encountered some problems with it, i.e. "corrupted" files from sourcesafe. i've read the archives, and someone mentioned that the number is actually unlimited(or 6.4million at the very least)...so m...

Unix permission problems with 'attrib'
Hi, I'm been using Samba for some time and I have been bugged by a problem with SourceSafe. I finally took some time to see what is going on and found the source of the problem (well, not in the source code though). I'm partially responsible, I have Unix files with the following rights "r--rw---" and Samba does not deal with these very well. I am now makind sure that this...

Commandline tools broke between Sept 21 and 20011108?
...me time. Today I updated to Debian testing's version of wine, which is 20011108. It seems to work-- but commandline windows apps are now behaving very strangely. Wine seems to put the console into raw mode! This causes programs that read lines from standard input, like ss.exe (part of visual sourcesafe), to hang. It also switches the screen like editors do, so you can't see the output after the program finishes! Since Debian doesn't seem to make any big changes to wine, I guess Wine has gone through a big change that has broken running commandline windows programs. Has anyone else run...

slow slow slow
I find apps running in wine are unbearably slow. In particular - HTML-Kit by Chami. I really like this editor on NT at work, I want to use it at home on my FreeBSD box. It works in wine, just very very slowly. I do not have a windows partition. I'm running wine by itself. Any suggestions on ways to get speedier results? -- Chip

Source safe on Samba, and corruption
...ving our large source safe databases to samba. After a day of use, the databases started showing signs of corruption (strange error messages from the SS client). However, it was discovered that the server was using a very sick ethernet port, so we guess that might be the reason for the corruption (sourcesafe is a really lame product but we cannot migrate away from it just now). We moved away from samba, but I would like us to be able to go back. Basically, I have one more shot at this, and I would prefer it not to fail again - even though the failure last time might be due to the sick network port an...

How *exactly* does the file caching mechanism work?
...by "workstation" in paragraph 4, do you mean the "workstation smb client-side cacheing, which means opportunistic locking" or do you mean "the foxpro application _running_ on the workstation which _may_ apply its own read/write cacheing"? [yes this is an issue: take SourceSafe, for example. it can apply its own locking mechanism or it can use the native file system one, and this is configureable in SourceSafe itself]. if you mean "workstation as in Oplocks" then you are probably hitting a Win95 client / NT server oplock bug, or just a Win95 oplock bug. with...

Connection reset by peer
Hi, I run Samba 2.0.5a on Linux 2.2.12 (Slackware). My clients get an error regularly (Windows95) "Network path not found" and then they lose their connection completely. The server logs the following: [1999/09/07 17:30:01, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection(521) sbit12 (137.56.40.139) connect to service sbitdata as user sbit (uid=1000, gid=100) (pid 134) [1999/09/07 17:33:10, 0]

OT local version control?
Hi, all, This isn''t about rspec, but this list has people whose opinions I respect. So, I''m looking for a new version control system for my local development. I was going to install subversion, but I''ve heard rumors of people using some newer ones. Thoughts? I''d like to be able to run it either locally or on a home server. If I run it off a home server, then

Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x20fb)!
Hi all I am trying to make wine load SourceSafe. After long f...ing with truetype fonts and constantly crashing xfs, I moved all my truetype font paths into XF86Config and now wine does not crash during the calculation of font metrics. Thanks to FAQs. Now, on wine startup, after rather long font refresh, I constantly get Xlib error. See subject...

Visual Source Save and samba
Is anyone out there running Microsoft's Visual Source Save with a samba share? We are doing so here and are encountering difficulties. The "working directory" is a samba share. It seems that VSS is not manipulating file permissions appropriately when items are checked in and out. User always has write access to the item. Is anyone using MS VSS successfully with samba and care to

Design changes are done in Fedora
...d at these extremes. Subversion, Git, or Fossil? Do we really need all the version control systems we have? Can?t we all just agree on git and call it ?done?? Again, programmer here: I?m glad we have a choice. The three I listed fit into very different niches. I?m glad we?ve destroyed CVS and SourceSafe; the world is a better place now. The time it?s taken people to convert to something better doesn?t bother me in the slightest. I gladly spent some of that time myself. Trump card: Linux. Need I say more? That?s creative destruction writ large.

Read-Only file attributes not being preserved.
...ifford/profile/My Documents/SMBTEST/ReadOnlyTest.txt The file is received by samba as a read-only file but during the 'renaming' from prf305.tmp to ReadOnlyTest.txt, this info is somehow lost. So is anyone else experiencing issues such as this and if solved how. This is really messing up sourcesafe usage as all the files are read-write and so no-one code is getting lost!! OT: Document Control System?
I'm sorry this is somewhat offtopic, but I do plan to use this to help me create documentation for the * project.. so I guess it is somewhat on topic :) Anyways, I am looking for some sort of document control system. It should act somewhat like a CVS where it keeps previous versions, allows people to submit documentation, keeps track of who has what document open etc.. etc.. The
