anti-virus
Hello all
Have a small problem. We use Samba as our PDC for a large amount of NT clients. We also use Sophos anti-virus to protect the workstations and servers. The problem basically is that although I can get Sophos to work properly I have to go to the actual workstation to install it from the server. Once I've done this Sophos works fine and automatically updates from the server.
However when I...

Can't get cable connection working on virtual router machine
I'm pretty new to KVM and have a KVM CentOS 7.1 hypervisor running a few
VMs. I'm moving all my VMs from an ESXi host as I want to use KVM in
future. Most of my VMs are working except for one which is running a Sophos
UTM router (Sophos UTM is similar to products like pfSense
<https://www.pfsense.org/>, Smoothwall <http://www.smoothwall.org/> etc).
The host has 3 physical NICs which are configured on the Sophos VM as:
1) LAN (fixed IP)
2) DMZ (fixed IP)
3) WAN (which is directly plugged into a cable...

talpy-deny error when combining samba and sophos
Hi,
I'm getting the following error when trying to save a file in a share
with activated on-access-scanning using sophos:
Nov 9 17:10:41 server kernel: talpa-deny: Error occured while
opening /vol/group/test.ppt on behalf of
process smbd[23713/23713] owned by 6688(6688)/0(7003) <512>
I know that this is not a samba problem, but may be someone had this
problem too and solved it. Basically this error comes up...

Re: Can't get cable connection working on virtual router machine
Hi Ajey, I thought I already was doing bridge mode. Below are the network
interface definitions from the XML config file for the Sophos VM. (Note
that it's actually the middle definition which is connected to the cable
modem which is different to how I showed it in the earlier diagram). What I
don't understand is that the interface type says "direct" in the XML even
though in virt-manager it shows up as "Brid...

Thank You!
Robert's suggestion indeed fixed the problem. I kept thinking
those entries were necessary in inetd.conf. Also, kind
thanks to Fred Gilbert for his prompt responses.:-)

[OT] *nix Server/Windows Client Tips and tricks
...at help
maintain a Samba network specifically, or a *nix
server in a Windows client environment generally.
For example, the first script I'm going to share
is a script that connects to the client machines
in my domain and retrieve my AV logs, process them
and return the results. My AV vendor (Sophos) has
tools for this, but they were more complex to set
up than this was to write, and would have simply
emailed the logs to me on a per machine basis --
which wasn't what I wanted and not very useful.
The second script is just a backup script that
backs up the samba server to a removable hard...

Re: Can't get cable connection working on virtual router machine
does you cable modem give you automatically the IP address? if thats the case then you need to do bridge configuration between nic3 and macvtap dhcp ip
and then you will be able to get dhcp attached IP to sophos vm

Oddity with internet access and R 11.0 with Sophos firewall and Windoze XP - solved
...t R
couldn't make contact on port 80. I rechecked with R 10.1.0: fine. I
reinstalled R 11.0.0 and selected "internet2" instead of "standard" for
internet, no change.
I thought "Can't be the firewall as it wouldn't get the list of mirrors"
but I went into Sophos firewall and manually added R 11.0.0 and
everything is now fine.
Very odd and I'd be interested to hear if some clever person can explain
why R 11.0.0 was making (very slow) access to the internet to get the
list of mirrors but then failing (I have the 10.1.0 location in the
windows path but n...

How do you guys protect Samba shares from Win32 based viruses?
That's pretty much the question. I've got Symantec
NAVCE running on my NT server protecting itself, the
Windows clients and the Exchange server, but what do i
do about my Linux based Samba server?
Will a linux based AV app search for Win32 based
viruses?
Thanks,

Problem with samba and sophie
Hello,
I'm using Sambsa 2.28 and I've just installed Sophos anti-virus and
sophie 3.04rc2.
If I run sophie standalone to scan a directory/folder it all runs ok, as
it also does in daemon mode.
I've changed my smb.conf file to specify
vfs option=/usr/lib/samba/vscan-sophos.so
When I access the share I receive the following in the syslog:

Anyone using antivirus software?
Hello list,
I was just wondering if anyone is using anti-virus software on their Samba server. I have protection on my clients, but I want to run software on the server too. I've looked at McAfee's Virus Scan, but as far as I can tell, it only uses "on-demand" scanning, meaning I have to trigger it from the command line, or run a cron job. I would like to have

Hypervisor loses network connectivity
...ng all the VMs up on "backup" and they've been running OK there
ever since.
Over the last few days I've rebuilt "main" and again all was going well and
I migrated 4 of the 5 VMs back onto it. Then this morning I came to set up
the final VM on "main" which is a Sophos firewall machine with 3 NICs (I
have 3 physical NICs). Nothing uses 2 of the 3 NICs except the Sophos VM. I
unplugged one of the ethernet cables from "backup" and plugged it into the
3rd NIC on "main" and all of a sudden "main" froze and again all network
connectivity...
